You see, it wasn't just the ability to post porn that made tumblr special. It was a combination of community, ease of use, presentation, anonymity and the eclectic mix of very personal, very individualized - 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 - porn blogs.
I've tried out lots of alternatives. From regular porn sites to obvious tumblr replacement clones (like PillowFort and Sharesome) and even Reddit. So far, this here is the best.
So APPARENTLY there were tech articles about Facebook's new decentralized "Twitter Clone" using ActivityPub already in March, with positive feedback from Eugen.
Now, remember that back then it was just about using the protocol; apparently #Tumblr is also switching to Activitypub and Eugen was positive about that too.
The shady part here is the talks with Instance admins and NDAs.
Why would Facebook need to talk to Mastodon Instance admins? And why the NDAs??
👉🏾 #Meta can/will use RSS, crawlers & “pings” to analyze our content, making FediBlocking useless
👉🏾 Engage friends, family, etcetera, who join #Threads (Instagram’s #ActivityPub powered proxy) from your #Misskey, #Mastodon, #WriteFreely, #Pixelfed, #WordPress, et al, accounts
👉🏾 If 10% of Fediverse is not on Zuckerverse, we can win
@smallpatatas 😂 Okay, I will check it out later. For what it’s worth, I do recognize #Meta’s entrance into the #Fediverse as inevitable as it is alarming. However, I do not want history to repeat itself again, so I am seeking a scenario where decentralization wins.
It would help if other players like #Tumblr got onboard.
@aurynn Yeah I do disagree with @stux on that matter since there is no redeeming quality for allowing the #GAFAM's - which are still #snitching on users to this very day [#PRISM is still live and running to this day] - on the :fediverse: / :activitypub: ....
There's a reason why people choose #Mastodon over #Facebook, :birdsite: :twitter:, :reddit: and #tumblr.
Some of you follow me because I’ve been around the #fediverse since 2017 as an admin and discourser for that time.
I think the pledge against #meta is probably good! There’s no evidence that meta has ever cared about the web, and they will pick the bones clean of anything they touch. Block on site, good hunting.
If a similar pledge comes around for #tumblr, I’ll probably be against it. There IS evidence that they want to be good neighbors on the web, and I’m willing to give them a chance.
When looking at the recent history of many popular and highly successful online sites, there tends to be a certain trend they’re all following: rampant corporate greed butting heads with its original core mission and its user base, all of which eventually leads to major issues for the site.
Discord, Twitter, Reddit, and Tumblr have something in common and it’s not good

Several sites in question — Discord, Twitter, Reddit, and Tumblr — all share that same fate, despite having very different purposes and suffering through a dissimilar series of events that led to their downfall or tipping point. And, they’re proof that most businesses will eventually hit a point in which management will decide to push profit margins and use bizarre and brutal methods to squeeze money out of it. The horrors of capitalism.
No for real though, where the fuck are indians on the #internet ? reddit? twitter (fuck that demographic of indians) ? facebook ?
I do know that a huge chunk of indians are on #instagram, but what the fuck? why are there so many less of us here on the fedi? the #tumblr side is just mostly bollywood or soap opera stuff which im not really into, so...
"We’re transforming what Labs means to Tumblr. Before this week, there was no group of staff at Tumblr considered 'members of Labs' experiments were built by anyone who felt like it, and they were usually small ideas.
... it’s become clear to us that we actually do need a dedicated group of people within the company working on prototypes of big ideas, ones that could fundamentally change Tumblr as a platform."
Reddit killing 3rd party apps reminded me that there are still 3rd party apps for #Tumblr — Hopefully Tumblr will continue to support their API.
Tumblr leaning back into being a weird corner of the internet (walking back a lot of the Verizon ownership era censorship etc) and seemingly not being evil/greedy is refreshing to see after watching Twitter and Reddit.
Even though the shift is small, it's big enough. It's incredible watching the Fediverse grow; first with the Birdsite flocking to #Mastodon, and now with #Lemmy and #Kbin growing in popularity (I only recently learned about Kbin)... this type of growth is enough to kickstart more people coming over here.
I'm looking forward to #Tumblr maybe joining sometime soon (oh, the memes you can see!), maybe some prominent Twitch people will try out #Owncast, maybe I can get some of my family over here...
With both #twitter and #reddit going down the shitter, it'd be amazing timing if #Tumblr released their #activitypub integration. Just saying. Won't get such a opportunity anytime soon again.

Tumblr on the Fediverse, what happened to that?
With the current reddit migration happening I've remembered when Tumblr promised they were gonna add support for ActivityPub "ASAP"....
