Did you ever use a niche distribution as your main operating system for three months or longer?
If yes, which one?
Mine was #Trisquel - a #Ubuntu fork with only free (as in freedom) software
I think I used Trisquel 7 and 8 almost daily for about two years on a Dell Precision with i5 CPU
It ran pretty well on it (replacing the Broadcom wifi card with an Atheros one was pretty easy) and I could do all I wanted to do, but that wasn't much more than web browsing, listening to music, etc.
Did you know that the FSF tech team provides critical services to the GNU Project, like email, build servers, release hosting, bug tracking, Git hosting, and provide servers to free software projects like #KDE, #Replicant, #Trisquel, and #Parabola, all on computers with free BIOSes? Hello folks! Exciting gnus from the Linux-libre world: We have 3 new versions out: 6.5.6-gnu, 6.1.45-gnu, and 5.15.134-gnu! With Linux-libre, you've got #freedom to explore, study, and modify ALL the software in your kernel. Dive in, the water's fine! #GNU#FSF#FreeSoftware#SoftwareFreedom
@freedo I think I just got the 5.15 update in my #Trisquel machine this morning. Thanks, all, for the great work! #FreeSoftware#SoftwareFreedom#GNU#Linux Or, does Trisquel build their own kernel, based on the Ubuntu non-free one?
Good God, I have rusted out!! Running this on the #trisquel#GNU machine. Have some stats: In #2MB#MineRacer, I made it to position 1 on the time scoreboard, and position 1 on the points scoreboard, my total time was 34 seconds! I scored 14702 points, jumped 0 pits, ducked 0 stalactites, and collected 10 coins! I ended my adventure at the bottom of a pit! https://2mb.co/mr#AudioGames
Tal vez no sabías pero ya existe #Mozzarella, un repositorio de add-ons para navegadores basados en Firefox, que solo ofrece aquellos con licencias libres.
Maybe you didn't know but now a repository of add-ons for Firefox-based browsers which only offers those with free licenses exists, and is called #Mozzarella
so my start menu stopped working again. On a whim, I hit Windows + S to see if the search box thing would open. It didn't. But then I hit the windows key again, and the start menu works again now. Somehow. For some reason. Anyway yeah that's a thing.
@JakeNL Hmmmmm... I have this one device, on which a fully-free #GNU#Linux distribution will work. I also have a Windows device, on which a distro probably won't install, so, I leave it alone; may need it someday. When I do this reinstall, should it be #Debian or #Trisquel Now, I'm using the former, in its "testing" build. The latter looks very nice, and has some annoyances, not found in the former.
Yesterday, I got my first (I believe/hop) block for being an insensitive person.
What happened?
I was advocating for free software and Linux instead of being tied to big corporations. One user pointed out that he had no choice, but to use Windows, because "Linux developers were all fuckers for not giving a shit about blind people"¹
I objected to the harsh

language, because there are indeed efforts (e.g. in KDE desktop team, the Trisquel distribution, the Accessible Coconut distribution etc.) to make Linux usable eyes-free, ears-free and hands-free.
On that objection, he called me an "ignorant sightie" (paraphrasing from memory, again) and blocked me.
So. What did I learn from this?
That he was an ungrateful asshole?
No!
But:
People have the right to have their feelings. It's not OK to
@bubstance@simendsjo Oh, I knew about the "entirely foss" aspect of Guix. This machine is capable of running such distros. It runs Trisquel well, and that's a fully-foss distro, as was Debian, unless you chose one of the special images with the non-free firmware added. I. E. Before Bookworm. As of Bookworm, Debian ships the one net installer image, that includes some non-free firmware. I wonder if this will help with on-boarding of Debian? I know the "missing firmware" issue is a blocking issue for many. This machine is from Think Penguin, so, it doesn't need non-free bits. There might be other machines, like this, out there, but they're hard to find. I wonder if this is why Debian relented? If Trisquel relents, it will be, basically, another snapless Ubuntu Mate. I forget whether Slint has the non-free stuff. It's been a while. #Debian#GNU#Linux#Guix#Trisquel#FOSS
@nixCraft the possibility of #NVIDIA doing anything, even spying, on my personal computer, or not being able to adjust the system's behavior to my disability or specific needs, all that makes me prefer #Nouveau and the accompanying #FreeSoftware stack, which worked/work for me when using #Trisquel. The supposed commodity given by NVIDIA in exchange for controlling my own material environment doesn't entice me as much.
Just reading through a mountain of #guix documentation. Probably gonna replace #debian on my X200 #thinkpad.
Anyway, I've downloaded and verified the ISO, put it on a usb stick. But ... I still haven't gotten round to sorting the firmware on the laptop. Which means no WiFi 🙄
Time for my hobby/day job. When I get time, I'll try to explain why I stuck with #emacs 21 for so long.
The reason I'm on 27.1 is #trisquel 11 (which I installed last week) has that in its repo. Also, I've recently started using a #chromebook and the gnu/linux environment is still rocking debian buster and emacs 27.1.
I have a X200 thinkpad, on which I may go 'cutting edge', with either an Arch based or Guix system (I'm leaning more towards GNU/Guix). I'll certainly put emacs 29 on that, I may even go with the GUI version. 😄
Just settling in on my ThinkPad X61s (Running #Trisquel 11 upgraded from 9 today). Still lots of tweaking todo. That can wait until after work tomorrow, I need some sleep 😪
Wow, I've been really out of touch with the progress of my preferred GNU/Linux distro. Trisquel 11 "Aramo" came out in late March, one year after the Ubuntu LTS release it's based off, so the crew can support it with security updates from upstream for 4 years:
