Also spotted via twitter, a couple of cool ‍n resources (1/2)

First: The Melanau Gateway Project - https://melanaugateway.wordpress.com/

To quote the About section: 'Inou Dengah! I am Aniq, a Melanau boy who got frustrated trying to find a centre for all things Melanau. Hence, the Melanau Gateway was born. This website aims to compile Melanau content that is scattered across.'

Melanau people are one of the major ethnic groups in Sarawak, one of the Borneo territories in Malaysia.

cendawanita,

(2/2) the next one is this handy chart from here:

It's pretty text-heavy so l'm going to only describe the alt-text briefly, and the post(s) below will describe it in full.

Unfortunately both accounts are still mostly on twt but that's quite typical in my part of the world. Worth a follow regardless

Fun fact: #Malaysia has nine sultans. Each take a turn to be the Agong (the prime ruler of the country).

We (ie commoners) must talk to them in a special form of Malay - Bahasa Istana (language of the palace).

Also fun fact: I suck so hard at Bahasa Istana I am really glad that I am so common I will never talk to a Sultan. In the olden days I would probably be in prison for disrespecting royalty

Besides pronouns, there are words for common folk and royals in #Malaysia. So you can't use common folk words with royals as it's considered rude. For example, common folk will say makan dan minum (eat and drink) but if we're talking about or to a sultan, we have to say "santap".
I could never remember all the royal vocab and would probably need notes if I talk to royalty lol.

PS: Left column, "commonfolk words", on the right, one for royals

as you know, i have started exploring the threadiverse aka the reddit alternatives lemmy and kbin > you have created a number of useful hashtags, among them and > what do you think about creating kbin magazines corresponding to these hashtags?

this would result in better searchability on the fedi ...

In 1960 Radio Singapore broadcast a series of Malay language lessons. I found two volumes of the textbooks that accompanied the broadcast in an used bookstore. I have scanned and put them on the Internet Archive.

Came across a Malay language textbook for Chinese speakers in Singapore flea market. I scanned it and put on IA:

Fun to try to figure out date & place: Preface mentions Malaysia "will be" founded 1963. Cover has the "Merdeka Lions" on Merdeka bridge (1956) so likely published in Singapore (see also owner dentist stamp) between 1956-1963. That look right?

This feel good video makes me emotional, but it’s also an example of how far queer people in Singapore have come (and how we continue to be oppressed). Many of us have found our way into lives and love, and social tolerance, yet we aren’t allowed very much beyond the annual park gathering in pink (where our foreign spouses and children are physically and legally not allowed to enter)

Me and grandma. "Mama" was always elegantly dressed - usually in a baju Nyonya. She even looked elegant when she just wore a sarong around the house, with a handkerchief tucked at her bosom.

Every time I show non-Malaysians what we take for breakfast, their response is inevitably: "OMG that's so heavy, I won't be able to eat all that!"

It is a truth universally acknowledged that #Malaysian stomachs are ready the moment the body is activated in the morning, and will not stop till midnight.

FYI just in case you travel to Malaysia.

Indian origin Hindu guy who considers himself white and admires Nazi ideology crashes a truck into the white house to seize power.

Friends from SEA, do you have elite upper class people like these who consider themselves white and not Asian?

Btw... this is not the first instsnce of an upper caste Indian claiming "whiteness". There have been court cases by men requesting white status as early as pre first world war days.

This is probably going to be controversial but what the heck.
I avoid Asian lit that the West celebrates because they tend to be "Harrowing Tales of Sad, Traumatised Asians". I'm not sure why the West find them so fascinating (though my mind thinks of rather uncharitable ideas). I especially despise stories set in colonial times.
I'm totally fine with "Tales of Murderous Asians", however.
To which I will happily recommend Keigo Higashino.

These public busses, now discontinued, were the hellions of KL roads. The bus conductors would pack as many people into the bus, shove little strips of paper at us and demand money. My favorite place was at the door, which was often open. As the bus wildly made its way down KL, I would clutch at the beam near the stairs, totally oblivious that I could be thrown out of the bus to my death. 😆
Taking LRT is like taking a limo by comparison!
