Algos don't help anybody. They just steal attention from some people you follow, to show you more from other people you follow. Or people you don't follow at all. Cause they claim to know better than you, what you want to see. Or say that so they can instead show you other stuff they want you to see. If you think you need them, just follow more people instead. If you're seeing junk without them, follow less people. It's not hard and it preserves our power over the corporate overlords. #SocialWeb
The opposite of the #AttentionDemocracy of the fedi is "their algorithm". Somebody else deciding what you see. That's what the #AI will always be too. "Their agent" who for now seems to work for you, but we all know the inevitable path of #enshittification. #SocialWeb
Never forget that we're dangerous. The potential of the fedi to upend the power of the already wealthy and powerful to control what the public knows, thinks about and considers as solutions to its problems is revolutionary. To no longer have that mediated by corporations, advertisers and a few people that governments can pressure is a serious threat to them. Publishing via the open web was huge, but so much great stuff never got seen. They are fighting the #AttentionDemocracy of the #SocialWeb.
Still want to replace liberal.city with a server name and network of users that could be much bigger and stand for a fedi culture that wants everyone here, as long as they don't harass people. Unpopular opinions and facts not currently widely accepted welcome. Not otherwise branded with any specific ideology or community. Anybody else interested? #SocialWeb
Enable Mastodon Apps
There are so many accounts trying anything to get the algos to direct attention to them on the corporate silos. It seems inevitable that as this grows with AI and the search for profit, it will drive everyone to the fedi. Or they don't give us a chance and most people just abandon social media. #SocialWeb
So interesting, segmenting video via mindmaps instead of timestamps https://akomaps.com/
"Ako Maps is a suite of learning tools that links visual diagrams to video lessons.. Ako Maps can be 'linked' to lessons. Browse the map, then click a topic to navigate directly to that topic in the video"
Who did/do you follow from #xitter via https://bird.makeup that is now also on #threads and enabling federation, such that you can switch your following method? Not sure I can point to anyone that fit this pattern for me :( #SocialWeb
right now I love #ActivityPub. but something like a Personal Data Server that I can keep at home or pay somebody to manage, move whenever I want and connect to any new service that somebody develops, seems like the inevitable way forward. a blob with all my stuff as safe as I am willing pay for, where these companies are competing to be the most trustworthy and reliable. instead of having it spread out everywhere or with Google or Apple. and them pushing me to use their services. #SocialWeb
I love that @caseynewton said that the #SocialWeb is the answer, but the WHY wasn't explained well imo. It basically never is. People focus on this place as a way to talk to each other instead of a way to surface the best stuff. The former doesn't threaten Google, the latter does. #AttentionDemocracy means no ads, algo or AI written by a third party. We collectively make the best info, ideas and art go viral. That's the magic.
How many people read but never post on social media? I think it's pretty high. You need an account to track who you are following for that, but that's it. Isn't this kinda like the podcast experience, where people have an app and an account there but nothing is public? Or consider how most people use YouTube.
Perhaps the #SocialWeb could learn from this. First get people on an app. Setting up their app account gives them an #ActivityPub ID on the developer's default server. Move on from there.
I actually have no idea how many boosts and favs some of the most successful posts get here in the Fediverse, because my instance shows a fraction of them no matter how successful they are. But guess what? I don’t care! It’s the best part here, to effectively unlearn that like-craving social media trait.
Everyone likes ”likes”, but in here it happens in our own terms and overall the metrics don’t really matter in the end.
People are biased. We always think we know shit that we don't. Given the chance, we will bias you too. For what we perceive as your own good. But the better good is always found by putting all of our eyes and brains on it. Systems that do that are never our first choice because they might lead to conclusions we disagree with, but luckily, most of us will choose them as our next best option. That's democracy. That's science. That's a mixed economy. That's the #SocialWeb. #LiberalValues
When thinking about Elon and X, please also consider this. If a place for speech gets accepted as the most open and popular, then what's popular there will be claimed as speaking for the general public. Winning in the public square matters.
But of course X is not a public square. It's a place where lefties increasingly feel unwelcome cause of harassment. But its use by big names keeps telling the world that it matters. We must displace it, by limiting harassment but not speech here. #SocialWeb
I get the sense that lots of people on #xitter feel like it was the first real public forum. where you could engage with public officials and journalists and subject matter experts. there was no algo. it was pure and important. they want that but don't trust that anywhere else can provide it. so they stay. not realizing that we are that done even better. or really could be if they all showed up. so I still think we will win cause the demand is there but it's damn frustrating. #SocialWeb
There, I said it. And now I'll probably pay for it.
Because there are boundaries around how we can talk about #Oct7. You can support the #Palestinians: yes. But showing any sympathy at all for Hamas, is beyond the pale — you'll get doxxed, cancelled, vilified as an antisemite and worse..."
glad you're here on the #SocialWeb. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. journalists should be clamoring for the level of independence it allows their writing to go viral, right? do you think the smaller audience is the main reason more writers are not here? thanks.
