#GreatAlbums1960s - #RollingStones - Their Satanic Majesties Request (1967). Long reviled as a "failed" Sgt. Pepper (which it isn't, being much much weirder), this LP catches the Stones in a state of playful confusion. The blurry "Citadel" sounds like a template for 90s Britpop. Bill Wyman "sings" on the acid trippy "In Another Land." "She's a Rainbow" is the band's best baroque ballad, and "2000 Light Years From Home" rivals early Pink Floyd in the mindfuck space race of '67.
#GreatAlbums1960s - #RollingStones - Between the Buttons (1967). The first of two oddball Stones LPs in 1967 was a creative bonanza for Brian Jones, who embellishes the carnivalesque pop of "Cool, Calm and Collected" and "Something Happened to Me Yesterday" with accordion, horns and a kazoo. I prefer the UK version, even though it lacks "Ruby Tuesday." But I'll take "Back Street Girl" (left off the US version) over a tacked on "Let's Spend the Night Together" any day.
#GreatAlbums1960s - #RollingStones - Aftermath (1966). The Stones write all their own material for the first time, and despite one painful substitution ("Paint it Black" on the US version, "Mother's Little Helper" on the UK -- both worthy of inclusion), the LP marks the beginning of the classic Stones era. The UK edition adds extra tracks (mostly marginal), but both versions keep misogyny intact ("Stupid Girl" and "Under My Thumb") as the Stones' nastiness comes creeping in.
#GreatAlbums1960s - #RollingStones - Out of Our Heads - UK Edition (1965). Released 2 months after the US version, this LP followed the UK convention of omitting top singles (esp. "Satisfaction") for separate release. The sting of omission is partly salved by "Heart of Stone" and "I'm Free," Jagger-Richard(s) songs that complement the soulful R&B covers at which the Stones were by now expert. Plus, "Nanker Phelge's" loopiest gem, "The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man."
#GreatAlbums1960s - #RollingStones - Out of Our Heads - US Edition (1965). The US version of this LP was the definitive step in Jagger-Richard(s) emerging as first-rate songwriters. "The Last Time," "Satisfaction" and "Play with Fire" bounced the habitual cover material to the margins, although versions of Don Covay's "Mercy, Mercy" and Sam Cooke's "Good Times" maintained the Stones' strong interpretive chops. Only a mediocre live Bo Diddley cover on Side 1 feels out of place.
#GreatAlbums1960s - #RollingStones – The Rolling Stones/ England’s Newest Hitmakers (1964). But for one substitution (“Mona” on the UK S/T version, “Not Fade Away” on the US “Hitmakers”), these were the same LP – a spirited first strike for the Stones as interpreters of American R&B standards, plus one Jagger-Richard(s) song, “Tell Me.” Brash confidence infuses standouts like Bobby Troup’s “Route 66” and Chuck Berry’s “Carol,” portending future glories for the nascent Stones. #GreatRockAlbums
The Rolling Stones first performed in the U.S. in 1964. Who then would’ve guessed the band would still be active, relevant and playing an American venue in 2023? The Stones played an intimate show Thursday night in New York City to launch their latest album, Hackney Diamonds, and were joined by none other than Lady Gaga on stage. I’m streaming the new LP . . . they were graceful with the autotune but it’s there and it’s a little weird to hear Mick’s voice processed that way. Otherwise this is 100% a #RollingStones product.

It was complete carnage... Keith and Ronnie were on their feet. The roof left the building: Andrew Watt gifted Paul McCartney a 64 Hfner with a built-in Univox Super Fuzz circuit and the Beatle used it on the new Rolling Stones album
Once McCartney released the full potential of his new Hfner, his eyes widened, and he just started ripping on it

KEITH RICHARDS Guests On The Howard Stern Show, Discusses How THE ROLLING STONES Got Their Name, Teaming Up With MICK JAGGER, And Late Drummer CHARLIE WATTS; Video
"Do I wish they could recapture the energy and textures they caught on tape at Muscle Shoals in 1969? Sure, but any Stones album this late into their too-big-to-fail multinational-corporation era was going to sound more polished than raw."
