Red Hat's decision to lay off 800 employees, despite being a profitable company, is disheartening. With executives not taking pay cuts, the burden of this decision is not shared equally. I stand in solidarity with the affected workers and encourage us to challenge the capitalist logic that prioritizes profits over people. RPM uses OpenPGP to protect software updates. In the fall of 2022, it switched from using its own internal OpenPGP implementation to Sequoia. Last week, Fedora 38 was released with a version of RPM that uses Sequoia. I've written about the 1.5 year journey in a blog post.

Something tells me Red Hat (read: IBM) is a little salty about the rebuilds. Also, I see this from both sides: first, AlmaLinux doesn't modify upstream packages other than removing trademarks - otherwise they'd have something like Oracle Linux, a distro based on RHEL, not a rebuild which could introduce new bugs and it wouldn't be 1:1 with RHEL. Second, RHEL is the upstream project and this, whether it's actually a bug or not, comes from them. Third, maybe Red Hat's representative shouldn't be a dick. It's what turns people off from open source projects. Fourth, if Red Hat really doesn't like others rebuilding their OS, then they should go fork FreeBSD and create RHBSD then. The FreeBSD license doesn't require source code to be released (it's why Netgate was able to close up pfSense). #opensource#linux#almalinux#redhat#rhel
