I don't know what it is about #OmniOS (or probably any #Illumos distribution), but it just feels right. I know this is really vague, but that's the best description I could come up with. I just boot it up and immediately get the feeling of "yes, this is it, this is how it should be".
It is nice to be able to move a VM from #FreeBSD to :omnios: #Omnios in a snap using the network just because they both ship with #ZFS and #bhyve. It nearly feels like vMotion.
With apologies to Samuel Taylor Coleridge, we have opened Helios, the illumos distribution that powers the Oxide rack https://github.com/oxidecomputer/helios
@ljrk@oxidecomputer Distributions in illumos land are not the same as with linux. Both #OmniOS and #OpenIndana simply distribute easily installable ISO's and packages. Helios is open to allow modification of Oxide racks but you get the same features more tuned to small systems with the Upstream omnios distro.
The dev machine is operational! #OmniOS on OCI AMD processor, delightfully boring. I still want to come back to spinning up an #OpenIndiana instance as a real workstation, but this works enough to get a build running.
Once I have it kicked off, I’ll start adding basic repeatability scripting, asset uploading, etc. eg continuous integration like it’s 1999.
Also, I’m going to start using #IllumosOnArm just so I can find my messages later. #illumos#arm
