Can we please not have the word „simply“ in NixOS manual or nixos.wiki? NixOS learning curve is super steep and it‘s frustrating when you start and you don‘t understand how to do things that are supposed to be simple #linux#nixos#documentation#newbie#frustration
@britter please do send PRs for the manual to remove them, that's completely right ; for the nixos wiki, it's hard because we cannot control the contents there
So, looking for examples of how federated services interoperate with each other - I've joined a Pixelfed instance with my Mastadon mstdn.ca login and that seems to propagate, but I don't seem able to login to other services that way - Bookwyrm? PeerTube? Does ActivityPub connect them? Or is it usually only instances within a service? Is there a resource page for this I haven't found yet? #activitypub#fediverse#newbie
Federation means that you can see and follow posts from those services on your own server.
If you are in Mastodon's web interface right now, and you click on this username link, it'll take you to my PeerTube profile as it appears federated on your server, and you can interact:
Hello world, I have been using (and am enjoying using) mastodon for a couple of days now but remain a little confused by some things. Many things, but... WELL how does other things in the fediverse like interact? I understand that different servers can passively "bleed" into each other through interaction, but that's just for mastodon. I've seen people advertise for things like Firefish or Calckey but what's the purpose of those? Isn't mastodon the same?
@clueless_capybara I'm sure someone else can explain it better, but my understanding is that Mastodon and non-Mastodon servers can interact in much the same way that different Mastodon servers interact. If you follow an account on a non-Mastodon service (like Pixelfed or Bookwyrm or Peertube), then those posts will show up in your Mastodon feed kind of as if they were toots: you'll see the post author, the time, the text of the post, and any associated content (images or video or whatever) as links.
I'd suggest following an account on another service to see how it works!
@clueless_capybara think of it like accessing the Internet through a PC vs a cell phone.
It’s all the same Internet but the PC and the phone will give you very different experiences. Web pages will at least be much smaller :) but they might also display different versions on the phone, versions better tailored to the different interfaces.
I play a LOT of Bethesda Games like the Fallout series (I skipped Fallout 76) but lately have been playing games that are Boomer Shooters (Boltgun) and God of War.
What kind of games do you like? The Boomer Shooters are mindless fun but in God of War (2018 PC versions) I play it for moving the story forward.
Finally cracking open my Arduino learner's kit and getting started on the basics of learning how to program with it. Hoping to use it as the brain for my attempt at a bat animatronic. No promises that it'll be ready for halloween, but heck, Imma try anyway!
@Wickerbax_Supreme
I really like the videos made by DroneBot Workshop on YouTube for Arduino tutorials (link below). In this specific video he uses the Servo library you mentioned but then also goes into how PWM is actually the driving force for servo motors near the end with a code example. https://youtu.be/kUHmYKWwuWs
Just arrived here fleeing Elroy's dumpster fire. Looking to find open arms and open-minds who value: honesty, democracy, freedom of expression and good humor. Hoping to avoid RW lunacy, self-serving egos and disinformation. Gimme a follow and I'll follow back if we might share values. Thanks. #newbie
#Newbie? Hope this helps. When I first started using Mastodon seriously, I:
. Looked for/found some old friends from elsewhere.
. Looked at the public timeline occasionally on the lookout for interesting people and hashtags.
. Followed hashtags with content I liked. Some I stopped because they got too noisy, but they did fill out my sparse timeline - no regrets.
. Judiciously followed more people, many discovered from hashtagged posts.
. Used hashtags in my posts and always give images alt text.
Don't push yourself. It comes naturally with practice. You try to solve a problem, google it, find an answer, copy it, then you have the same problem and do it again, then again, and the next time you already remember how to do that and what functions to call.
Hey @knitting friends I am facing a new problem. #learner#Newbie I am #knitting my cardigan on metal old size 8 needles (4mm) and now the back has grown a lot. I am getting #pains in my hand and upper arm. I noticed and stopped last night but still sore today. Obviously I will take a break until it heals, but then what should I do? Would swapping to circulars help or should I rest my knitting on a table rather than my lap or is there a better solution?
@52square@knitting Swapping to circulars will help some, because the weight of your knitting is more evenly distributed across your body and supported by your legs, but the pain won't go away completely. Ask any knitter. The best solution is frequent breaks. I usually rest my hands for a few mins after every couple of rows.
@52square@knitting Circulars will 100% help with supporting the weight of the knitting on the cable, and you could look into different knitting styles, like Portuguese Style, which is excellent for mitigating arm/hand pain.
I would recommend, though, checking with a physiotherapist and tell them what you're doing, and they can give good exercises to reduce the ongoing pain, and strengthen everything to support things better
@EighthLayer@OldCuppa Looks like a really cool game. It’s got raving reviews and was even named Game of the Year in 2019. Boom! Wishlisted on Steam. Thanks, Jamie!
@dawnysideup@OldCuppa It's one of the best games I've played and it really took me by surprise as I just randomly decided to play it when it was included on Xbox Game Pass. I really hope you both enjoy it! :vaultboy:
