U.S. Supreme Court says bankruptcy law overrides tribal sovereignty (www.reuters.com)

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that U.S. bankruptcy protections override a Native American tribe's sovereign immunity, stopping the tribe's effort to collect on an overdue payday loan taken out by one of its members who subsequently filed for bankruptcy.

Native American Families Are Being Broken Up in Spite of a Law Meant to Keep Children With Their Parents

In a 7-2 ruling, the Supreme Court just upheld the Indian Child Welfare Act.

Read this new report from @lussenpop that highlights just how important ICWA has been in keeping Native American families together — and how some families are still torn apart despite the law:

Good piece on #Vaping. It’s definitely widespread at #UK schools. Many children start in Year 7, when they are 11 or 12, and by Year 8 “everyone does it”.

Disposable vapes are bad for children and for environment too. The #Lithium in them makes them a waste hazard, and Lithium mining has high environmental and social costs - if at all, it should be used for #EVs and medicine, not vaping. Typical of our shitty government that they were given go-ahead 1/4

I've always loved pottery. Someday I would love to set up a kiln and wheel here. Until then, I can collect from other artists and draw/paint what I like.

New Zealand has designated seats in their parliament for indigenous Maoris. (Maoris can register to vote for either the regular seats or the indigenous seats.) I'd be open to something like this customized for the US.

What gets Native Americans politically and civically engaged?

4 studies with 11,000+ Native Americans finds that identifying as Native was associated with engaging in get-out-the-vote behaviors and intentions to engage in civic activities in the future

Effects likely do to the recognition of the omission of their group from society and perceive greater group discrimination

Today in Writing History May 22, 1927: Author Peter Matthiessen was born. Matthiessen was an environmental activist and a CIA officer who wrote short stories, novels and nonfiction. He’s the only writer to have won the National Book award in both nonfiction, for The Snow Leopard (1979), and in fiction, for Shadow Country (2008). His story Travelin’ Man was made into the film The Young One (1960) by Luis Bunuel. Perhaps his most famous book was, In the Spirit of Crazy Horse (1983), which tells the story of Leonard Peltier and the FBI’s war on the American Indian Movement. Peltier is still in prison (over 43 years so far) for a crime he most likely did not commit. The former governor of South Dakota, Bill Janklow, and David Price, an FBI agent who was at the Wounded Knee assault, both sued Viking Press for libel because of statements in the book. Both lawsuits threatened to undermine free speech and further stifle indigenous rights activism. Fortunately, both lawsuits were dismissed.

Native tribes living in the NE US burned forest underbrush to open up the space while keeping the tree cover. I ran across this controlled burn that I think represents how this worked.

The goal was to create an open game park-like space in which people lived alongside the animals they hunted and the crops they grew. This approach was different from how English settlers lived in nature, hence a key aspect of the culture clash.

Oil Company Gave $200K to Group Accusing Pipeline Opponents of Taking Secret Money

"A First Nations advocacy group whose leader has accused pipeline protesters of being beholden to hidden financial interests has taken hundreds of thousands of dollars from one of Canada’s top oil and gas producers, newly reviewed corporate documents reveal.

Stephen Buffalo, CEO of the Alberta-based Indian Resource Council, is one of the most outspoken Indigenous voices in favor of oil and gas expansion, testifying several times to Canada’s federal government and appearing frequently in mainstream media outlets.

On multiple occasions he’s used his platform to attack the credibility of First Nations people and environmentalists who oppose new oil and gas development, alleging they are being controlled by secretive funders and one time asking “who’s really pulling the string here?”
