You don't need to use the official Mastodon apps, they're not the best way to use Mastodon. The official apps only arrived last year, and they were intended as "Fisher Price My First Mastodon" things with a restricted set of features.
Third party apps have been around longer than official ones, and include way more features. You can sign in with the same account on all apps.
:android: On Android try Tusky, Fedilab, Megalodon, Tooot
:apple_inc: On iPhone/iPad, try Toot!, Ice Cubes, Ivory, Mona
Today I tried several 3rd party clients on iOS and MacOS: #Mammoth #Tusker #IceCubes #Metatext
But most likely I will stick with #PWA version of Mastodon. It doesn't need any updates and has all recent features.
i’m tired of clicking “open in browser” in my mastodon client to see all the replies to a post / look at a user’s profile who i don’t follow
is there any mastodon client with a “fetch more data” button or something which will automatically do this for me and show the posts to me in the client?
@feditips I don’t access the account via the website, but I typically use the #Metatext app as my primary and the #IceCubes app for things where it excels (my needs), such as editing and quoting
Metatext doesn’t give me any lag problems and even excels in most other things
I posted some comparisons between the two the other day and tagged you. There are some good details about their pros/cons that might complement this
Really IMO the solution for having everyone add #AltText to images is to fix it in the clients and protocol. Make adding alt-text the default, the easy route. Add tools to give an easy starting point for describing images.
#MetaText actually did a really good job with this in a lot of ways, though there's definitely room to improve still.
By now there's no doubt Threads will "go mainstream", but this has actually made me think early Mastodon users were right after all about not wanting this place to 'go large'. I admit, I initially wanted Mastodon to go mainstream, as there wasn't another alternative to Twitter until recently (when there are now too many). But I now like the idea of this being an alternative place — more down-to-earth, less marketing-y (altho I still want to pimp my articles here!).
@ricmac This is really a common problem with open source software: The only thing less appealing to OSS developers than writing documentation is working on user experience. Corporations succeed where OSS fails here because corporations are willing to invest the capital to get the experience right and often win because of that even when the OSS tech is better.
That being said, #metatext isn’t bad but I agree it’s a real pain to understand how one goes about setting up an account.
@coogle@ricmac@crash#Metatext is defunct but the #Feditext community fork is under active development (by me, mostly) and includes many, many new features (including catching it up with Mastodon 4 additions) and some performance improvements. DM me if you're interested in the TestFlight beta.
I gave the #Mastodon iOS client another try. I still don’t like it. It is slower than #MetaText, and the UI remains a bloated and poorly thought out mess. I don’t understand why it needs to waste 2 whole lines for reblogs/favorites, why it is so bad at clearly displaying a replies feed, why it needs to remind me on top of every reply who it is for as a result, why there is no option for always displaying alt text and why so many important buttons are at the top of the screen instead of bottom
Because I’m a cheapskate and because I wasn’t sure to what extent I wanted to commit to #mastodon, I decided to use the “native” Mastodon iPhone app. It’s okay but it takes FOREVER to load feeds. Therefore, I also started using #Metatext but the developer has stopped working on it. So, I finally paid for Toot! and I have to say it’s great. Glad I did.
@Mastodon Normally I use #metatext but gave the new #mastodonapp update for iOS a try. Nice design and I can edit posts which Metatext can‘t.
What I don’t like:
Pinned toots do not show in profiles. This sometimes buries some really great but older content 😏👎
Visibility of toots can still not be set to „unlisted“. For me not a big thing as I compose longer threads in the browser. But it‘s a useful feature which was implemented for a good reason in mastodon and should be part of the M-app.
In #Metatext, if I'm reading down through my timeline and it's been a few days, when I load from toot/post below, it goes way back, and I have to keep pressing that until it eventually gets to the post right below the one I was reading. Is there a quicker way around this? Load from toot below seems like the action I want, not above, unless that works differently than how I thought it does. Thanks!
If I could have just one change made to the UI for #Mastodon, #Metatext, and #Calckey it would be that the “Posts” column only showed the user’s original posts. Boosts and replies would be separate.
@skyfaller@acm_redfox@adamtuttle#Metatext proper is over, but the codebase lives on! i added post editing to the #Feditext community fork months ago. we're in TestFlight beta; DM me for an invite if you're interested in trying it out.
haven't found a free Mastodon client for iOS that has the features i need, has an UI i like and is reasonably bug free. even some of the paid options out there lack features. more of an annoyance than a dealbreaker, but most of them don't support custom emojis, for example. switching between multiple accounts tends to be a hassle. the official Mastodon app couldn't do it at all the last time i checked, or i'd just use that.
#MetaText app is no longer maintained. It looks like it's still available on the store and was still working.
If you're using the app I'd seriously consider moving to a new app and revoking access to MetaText given any future discovered vulnerabilities have no means to be reported or resolved.
And that’s the end of the journey, did a few sides and exploration in the beginning, but the sides feel pretty pointless to me so happy to call it with the final mission complete and 22 hours under my belt… #JediSurvivor#starwars#playstation#console#gaming#PS5Share
@darth I just noticed this and made me thing of your post about #spoilers a ways back.
In #metatext I have set my images to sensitive which does not hide the text, but I just opened ivory and realized that’s probably not a #fediverse feature. Maybe at least some of them are accidental #spoilers
Everyone says "don't use the official #MastodonApp", though I have no idea why.
Heard good things about #Metatext but I also heard it's no longer maintained?
So I tried #Ivory@ivory but I have to sign up for a subscription just to find out what benefits a subscription gives (aside from the ability to post). Nope, sorry.
App must: have no ads, obviously, and absolutely must handle posting & reading threads in a sane and sensible way (unlike the web)
