By now there's no doubt Threads will "go mainstream", but this has actually made me think early Mastodon users were right after all about not wanting this place to 'go large'. I admit, I initially wanted Mastodon to go mainstream, as there wasn't another alternative to Twitter until recently (when there are now too many). But I now like the idea of this being an alternative place — more down-to-earth, less marketing-y (altho I still want to pimp my articles here!).

coogle,

@ricmac I disagree. I’d still like to see Masto mainstream. I don’t have time to manage multiple social accounts and unless this is mainstream there’s a lot of useful content and interactions in groups, etc. that I need and miss. Unfortunately as it turns out until I’m ready to give up the various valuable FB groups I’m in when I have limited time to deal with socials FB wins and Masto loses.

coogle,

@ricmac This is really a common problem with open source software: The only thing less appealing to OSS developers than writing documentation is working on user experience. Corporations succeed where OSS fails here because corporations are willing to invest the capital to get the experience right and often win because of that even when the OSS tech is better.

That being said, isn’t bad but I agree it’s a real pain to understand how one goes about setting up an account.

coogle,

@crash @ricmac Shit.

coogle,

@crash @ricmac @vyr Honestly at the moment I’m not hurting using the MetaText I’ve got (I’m using it on my MBP M1 and my iPhone).. so I don’t know if I want to jump through the TestFlight hoops to fix a problem I don’t currently have. It’s good to know there is at least someone trying to carry the torch as Metatext was the best client I’d found to date.

I bet it burns Zuck just a little that his half-assed Twitter clone got more users in 1 day than the Metaverse he pivoted the entire company to has got in years and years.

coogle,

@seldo I doubt it. Zuck’s little clone is going to make tons of cash almost instantly, make a real dent in his competitors, and probably still sees the Metaverse as a future-forward project worth burning capital on — capital he has more of now thanks to Threads.

coogle,

@ramsey @seldo Well Zuck has the advantage of being able to bootstap the adoption with existing users here, for sure.

coogle,

@ramsey @seldo True, but I don’t think that really matters all that much at this scale. All that said, I’m not ready to start writing obits for BlueSky just yet… Threads is basically a subset of Instagram for the moment after all. I don’t expect there have been a lot of truly “new” Threads users that weren’t already on Insta. I assume BlueSky is trying to be something completely different.

coogle,

@ramsey @seldo I suspect any scale struggles they are having at Bluesky are probably artificial (i.e they are being cheap), rather than any sort of real architectural issue. Zuck clearly built for massive day one adoption and built the infrastructure to support it.

coogle,

@ramsey @seldo I get your point, I just wonder if Jack has a different approach and goal than Zuck right now. If you consider the timeline here Jack has been working on Bluesky probably before Zuck even considered Threads… he also would have known that “yet another social network” would have been a waste of energy without something to really distinguish it from its well-established competition (including his own pre-Musk Twitter).

coogle,

@ramsey @seldo It’s hard to really see exactly what Bluesky hopes to be right now from the outside looking in, so I imagine considering these things whatever Bluesky has planned the fact Twitter users are jumping to Facebook doesn’t really matter… I mean, otherwise what was the point of the effort from the start?
