Reading about #NarrativeTherapy, of which I knew very little and am learning much, but never expected to end up reading about #Foucault and #neoliberalism as the theoretical underpinnings of this practice. It makes me hopeful for my future as a #MentalHealth therapist.
Quote from #JohnWinslade: Neoliberalism transforms people into less #democratic, more governable, docile, more consuming, neoliberal subjects who nevertheless believe themselves to be free because they have consumer “choice.”
"The Biopolitics of Gender" by Jemima Repo is a mind-meltingly good book.
"The idea of gender identity, I argue, emerged in conjunction with the transsexual subject, which was entangled with other budding attempts to regulate the emotional economy of families to maintain a sexual order of things around the social, political, and economic ideal of the nuclear family."
Jacques Donzelot’s The Policing of Families (1977) in Context
by José Pestaña
"Nikolas Rose has highly praised The Policing of Families as ‘path-breaking’, and as ‘the best account’ of ‘the whole range of technologies that were invented that would enable the family to do its public duty without destroying its private authority’"
‘Biopolitical Experience: Foucault, Power and Positive Critique’ reviewed by Cary Federman – Marx & Philosophy Society
"biopower cannot be strictly understood in negative terms, as a caged existence. Rather, subjectivity for Foucault exists within a plurality of forces, some of which negate, but some of which provide the grounds for producing alternatives ways of living."
Reclaiming Biopower and Biopolitics - Alliance for Sustainability
"Biopower works by distinguishing between what is ‘normal’ and what is ‘abnormal,’ since people are disciplined to avoid the abnormal."
"rather than choosing to constantly clash with societal expectations, it may be easier to create a ‘new normal’ where you are part of a community with the same attitudes."
📖 Revising the paradigm proposed by Foucault, Massimo Asta published a paper in the journal Studi storici on the censorship exercised by fascist regimes on political prisoners.
In all these years I never noticed that whoever translated #Foucault's Order of Things didn’t get credit. The book even begins with a "Publisher’s Note" about the translation, but never says who did it. Strange, because Tavistock, which published it in the UK, was usually good about that. I wonder what the story is there.
(I have an imaginary dog in this hunt because I worked on all the Foucault books for the New Press. NP was founded by André Schiffrin after he was forced out of Pantheon — where he’d put out the first US editions of Foucault. If the NP versions are more readable than most translations of his work, you have me to thank. 😎)
From a commenter:
"In my experience, the right instrumentalizes ideas to serve the ends of power. If Foucault occasionally serves that purpose, the right won't hesitate to use his thinking—but without any consistency or real understanding. For the right, understanding ideas is secondary to weaponizing them."
An unpublished primary source of Michel #Foucault, transcribed from his lessons from 1954-1955 at École Normale Supérieure and annotated by Jacques Lagrange: Problèmes de l’Anthropologie, published in Espaço Michel Foucault:
@PhilosophicalPsychology@philosophy@sociology
between the translation of Foucault's "Surveiller et Punir" as "Discipline and Punish" and the mistranslation of "force du travail" in Irigaray's ouvre as "workforce" (instead of labour-power as refclected in English Marxist jargon) I do not think you should trust any late 20th century French #philosophy translations lol
