so, a few years ago at Motherboard, we published an article about a smart CCTV company that was creating a surveillance network in Johannesburg, South Africa that networked the cameras together, could be monitored all at once, had image detection, etc. Experts said this was enabling a surveillance state and "digital apartheid." People were horrified.
Similar tech is now all over the US, in small towns and big cities:
Last month, I had the honor of speaking at Hawai'i's Behavioral Health #ECHO event. Here is a link to our discussion of the memoir I wrote with #UCSF#neurologist, Dr. Bruce Miller, #Finding the Right Words. We talked about #caregiving, #grief, the power of precision #diagnosis, and the value of #narrativemedicine.
Sources close to #ECHO have confirmed that the #MCU series will consist of FIVE episodes that are approximately an hour long each. There were originally 6 episodes, but one of them was cut due to pacing issues. 😎
I've definitely noticed Alexa has been struggling after the layoffs and RTO policy has reduced the size of the teams supporting this service. I wonder if managers will allow the developers who are left to actually fix the problems. https://mastodon.social/@arstechnica/111093204374022996#Alexa#Echo

Personally, I think profanity very loudly at my code but don't actually type it. In my early-ish years, a team member had a 130 line profanity-laden comment in every header file about some restriction in Visual Studio that he didn't understand. Turned out he was totally wrong. That stuck with me.
@tewha grepall "(fuck|shit|cock|bastard)"
finds several uses in my pre-2000s code, very few (and more false positives like "bastard sword") in anything this century. I swear a lot while writing code, it's rarely needed in the code.
Anyone else still got first-gen #amazon#echo#dot devices in use? Are you finding that you need to power cycle them regularly for streaming audio to work reliably?
The genesis of these piano pieces came from witnessing the mental and physical decline associated with Alzheimer's and reading Ovid's Metamorphoses and seeing a connection with Echo's story.
