If you remember the house in Juneau, Alaska, that was dramatically washed into the river during a flood about a month ago, there's a shocking detail buried in the middle of this story: that house started out 50 feet from the river's edge. Another house similarly demolished was 100 feet back. 😮
@grammargirl
They used to think a single flood like this dug the entire Columbia River Gorge
Now they figure it was about 40 floods, each caused when a glacier melted, freeing up water behind it that was suddenly “13 x the flow of the Amazon River” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missoula_floods
None of that millions of years stuff like the Grand Canyon
The Gorge was blown out in a fraction of that with its explosive flooding
But if we don’t stop the water rising, nobody will have any high ground
Hmmm..... another #climatecrisis metaphor in the offing, as #BurningMan descends into a muddy 'hellscape' after torrential rain - well, we know #clinatechange is about erratic weather, not just the heat...
another part of me wants to say there's some karma in a burning man being put out by rain..... but there you go
Climate change is an immediate threat to the majority of the world's population.
We need a local, regional, state, national, and international "moon shot" type of concentration of effort using available resources while developing and advancing new science and technologies to counteract the damage humans have caused.
Without this type of all-out, universal cooperation, human civilization, and perhaps humanity itself, are in imminent danger of extinction.
#LandBack and #rematriation are proving to be highly effective ways to effect long-term Everything, Everywhere, All at Once #ClinateChange mitigation, in addition to being morally righteous and long overdue.
An #influencer went viral for condoning #Shein’s labor practices. The real problem is much larger
"Some workers,... spend 18 hours a day churning out hundreds of pieces of clothing in exchange for a few cents a #garment. In May, U.S. lawmakers asked the Securities and Exchange Commission 👉[#SEC] to crack down on the fast-fashion brand for failing to disclose the possibility of forced labor practices."👈
Food security is not topical in the US/West but it's more prominent in Asia. The farmer base of Asia is in duress as many are small plot farmers. As they age out and are subject to increasingly marginal yields, the societal stability of the world's factory is a bit tenuous. None of this is made better by the large Panda to the North.
