Branded foreigners 17 years ago, Assam siblings among 3 to get citizenship back
A brother-sister pair from Assam, Bimal Das and Suma, along with their father Nilmani Das, have had their 'foreigner' status overturned by a foreigners' tribunal after a lengthy legal battle. Dipti Malakar, another woman from Assam, also received a clean chit from a foreigners' tribunal. Their cases were heard for years before an ex parte judgment was passed against them in 2011. They were never arrested.

"As conflation and confusion abound after 7 October, we need clear thinking about antisemitism"
by:
David Feldman, director of the Birkbeck Institute for the Study of Antisemitism,
Brendan McGeever, senior lecturer at the Birkbeck Institute for the Study of Antisemitism.
"The Campaign Against Antisemitism #CAA was formed in 2014, after a previous Israeli bombardment of Gaza. Its explicit founding purpose was to counter the antisemitism that arises in Britain when Israel pummels Palestinians and, implicitly, to defend Israel’s right to pummel. Chief executive Gideon Falter is also vice chairman of the Jewish National Fund #JNF UK, which is reported to have provided funding to the CAA in the past. The JNF enjoys charitable status and its existence predates the Balfour Declaration. For over a century, it has bought up land in historic Palestine, helped plan the Nakba, furthered exclusive Jewish settlement and transformed colonised land into parks and forests to erase what had been before."
Why A 79-Year-Old Former Police Officer & Dalit Human Rights Defender Faces Attempted Murder Charges
After a protest for land rights in Gorakhpur on 10 October 2023, the Uttar Pradesh police arrested 10 activists, mostly Dalit, including Sarwan Ram Darapuri despite little evidence of any overt violence at the gathering. Even though videos show police officers were present and listened to demands of an acre of land for marginalised communities, the protestors face charges of attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy.
USCIRF Reiterates Concerns on Religious Freedom in India, Calls for Release of Religious Prisoners of Conscience
“Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Dalits, and Adivasis are experiencing increased levels of attacks and acts of intimidation," said USCIRF Chair Abraham Cooper. “Authorities have continued to suppress minority voices and those advocating on their behalf. These trends, and their implication for U.S. foreign policy, should not be ignored.”
Why A 3.5-Year-Old Poorly Investigated Case Against Students Of Delhi’s Jamia University Is Going To Trial
A violent protest in New Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia University almost four years ago, on 13 December 2019, started a two-month agitation against India’s contentious new citizenship law. Eight months after a district court judge discharged students of Jamia for lack of evidence and six months after the Delhi High Court reversed the order, the trial is proceeding with one hearing a month. Article14 reviews why a case lacking evidence after 3.5 years of investigation is being prosecuted.
Courts Remain Silent Spectators As Minorities Remain In Fear Amidst Rise Of Illiberal, Communal Forces: Justice (Retired) AP Shah
Justice (Retired) AP Shah recently expressed concerns over the rise of ‘illiberal and communal’ forces in the country, fuelled by extremist ideologies, and the attendant culture of hate, polarisation, and vilification of minorities, particularly Muslims, taking root across the nation. He also raised apprehensions about the weakening of formal institutions like the courts in India as well as the erosion of public trust in them.
Imprisoning A Child is A ‘Flagrant Violation’ Of The Law, Yet Police Freely Violate The Law, 77% Of Detentions In UP
Despite the Supreme Court calling the detention of children ‘a flagrant violation of the law’, right-to-information data reveals at least 79 such detentions, 61 from Uttar Pradesh alone over five years. Juvenile justice law clearly says that no child in conflict with the law can be placed in a police lock-up or jail.
Former Alighar Muslim University VC Tariq Mansoor appointed BJP vice president; Anil Antony as national secretary
In December 2019, Mansoor had faced strong criticism after he had called the police at the university campus to quell protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and police violence at Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia.
Using abusive words against prime minister derogatory, not seditious: Karnataka High Court
The court made the observation while quashing an FIR against officials of a school where a play had been staged against the Citizenship Amendment Act and NRC.
No, this is not about anyone's sex life. It's about #mosquitoes.
Female mosquitos bite, males don't.
The "Sterile Insect Male" technique consists on raising and librating large numbers of sterile males. They will mate with the females. Their offspring will be sterile. As a consequence, the populations will drop.
This is a way to combat the #TigerMosquito (Aedes albopictus).
