Interesting & fun read, clever & inventive. 21st century high tech, witches, magic & time travel, what's not to love. The only not so good moment was when I was finished reading it. Until I discovered there's a sequel 👻 Definitely recommend.

Because every one of us has our box, a dark chamber stowing the thing that lanced our heart.
Marisha Pessl, Night Film

While this has some darker parts, this isn’t so much of a scary book, but more like a crazy roller coaster ride. I highly recommend it.

If an #ebook subscription service sounds like it might be for you, please consider supporting one that isn't owned by #Amazon, that exploits its dominant position to force authors into exclusivity deals preventing their work from being available elsewhere. There are alternatives to #KindleUnlimited, including (but not limited to) #KoboPlus. @bookstodon

Try it #free for a month (https://www.kobo.com/plus)

There was a poll that stated—Rowling’s opening line in the HP series is one of best in the world. Someone posted about how there are a bunch of other opening statements that are better.

Here’s one of my personal favorites, from Gabriel Garcia Marquez (in English):
“It is inevitable — the scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love.”

What are some of your favorite opening lines in literature? 😊

"I’m pretty much fucked." - The Martian by Andy Weir

Not exactly poetic, but it grabs your attention. 😉

"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." - The Gunslinger by Stephen King

King had a few great ones, but I love The Dark Tower series, so thought that one was as good as any to include in this discussion. 😎

#PublicServiceAnnouncement:

No, my #books are NOT available on #KindleUnlimited, nor will they ever be as long as #authors are forced into “accepting” the #Amazon exclusivity condition that forbids my work being sold at any other #ebook retailer.

I read Iron Curtain by . A page-turner set in the 1980s. A young privileged 'red princess' from a poor unnamed central European country elopes to London in the name of love. The sense of displacement has echoes of the Patricia Engel book I read just before this. There's also enjoyable farce here even if the clichés about the UK are laid on a little thick at times.

keefeglise,

Finally finished The Nutmeg's Curse by Amitav Ghosh. Learnt a lot of things that probably should have been obvious to me. Mainly about how colonialism uses destruction of the environment as a weapon. The displaced lived alongside nature, the occupiers saw it as a resource to be exploited. They still do of course. The richer ones have their eyes on other planets... #Bookstodon #BookToot #keefsreads
