I just renewed my library book in a few seconds from my phone while in another country after the library reminded me that it's due back soon. My inner toddler, who borrowed her first books after being lifted up the steps into the mobile library bus, will never not feel that digital library services are actual magic.
Whose fault is it that I never read Stine Pilgaard before? Well, it’s not the librarians’ fault, because I randomly borrowed this from the library's 'Did you ever get around to reading this?’ display. It is so good. So funny, so witty, so observant. Yet another example of why my favourite genre is ‘slim contemporary novels by Nordic Lady Novelists starring tricky smart observant imperfect Lady Protagonists living imperfect ordinary lives'.

Went to browse eReolen (‘electronic shelf') and the library site headline is ‘The last books in the library’. Oh no have we used up the year’s quota, no more books until January? Turns out it’s promoting authors whose surnames begin with the last letter of the alphabet, the ones we mightn’t discover because we rarely reach the last shelf.
I love that the librarians thought of this. I hope librarians inherit the earth. Or at the very least, that they have a nice weekend.
“It's absolutely fantastic that as a citizen, you come into an empty library and treat it so lovingly.”
Librarian’s remark after Göteborg Main Library was accidentally left unlocked at Halloween and 400 people wandered in. ‘People sat reading newspapers. There were families in the children's section and people looking books up in the database. 200 books were borrowed and nothing was damaged.’
Thanks to @mrsostberg for sharing this. Am sharing in English as it’s so nice.
Meryl Streep is wasted in movies. She coulda been an audiobook narrator. She read this so brilliantly that I forgot it was one person reading to me. I thought I was in the story with all the other characters. She read this so brilliantly that I forgot it was Meryl Streep.
I used my little pocket computer phone to borrow a wonderful Ann Patchett novel free from the library, then Meryl Streep read it to me as I wandered around the city. I never wanted a jetpack or hoverboard, this is an amazing enough future for me.
“Borrow the books you didn’t get around to when they first came out.”
Thank Odin for librarians, out here championing older and overlooked books. Reminding you about that book you meant to read when it was new and talked-about, then forgot about.
Not only do we not need to bring money to the library, but the librarians aren’t trying to convince us all the time that we always need the newest shiniest product. Socialism rocks.
”Have you ever noticed that for a while, kids love books, but then they just stop reading? This phenomenon is most frequent with young boys, who lose interest in reading as they age.”
I know it’s twee to romanticize libraries, but it’s hard not to when your local library welcomes new-born babies into the local community by sounding the world’s longest gong.
