Beneath Cappadocia, Turkey, there are around 200 underground cities, thought to date back to about 800BC.
The largest, Derinkuyu, could accommodate 20,000 people. It provided protection for thousands of years to a wide range of peoples at risk of attack or persecution, and was used as recently as the early 20th century.
A five mile tunnel linked it to another underground city, Kaymakli.
