'Why AI Is the Most Important Issue in the Writers' Strike'
AI isn't just central to the WGA strike either — it's the first battle in a much larger war that will affect all Americans.
I spoke with everyone from WGA Board members to Damon Lindelof about how the alarm bell about #AI was first run within the Guild and why it’s an existential threat to our industry (and countless American industries).
“The trick, of course, is that Silicon Valley routinely calls theft “disruption” – and too often gets away with it. We know this move: charge ahead into lawless territory; claim the old rules don’t apply to your new tech; scream that regulation will only help China – all while you get your facts solidly on the ground. By the time we all get over the novelty of these new toys and start taking stock of the social, political and economic wreckage, the tech is already so ubiquitous that the courts and policymakers throw up their hands.
We saw it with Google’s book and art scanning. With Musk’s space colonization. With Uber’s assault on the taxi industry. With Airbnb’s attack on the rental market. With Facebook’s promiscuity with our data. Don’t ask for permission, the disruptors like to say, ask for forgiveness. (And lubricate the asks with generous campaign contributions.)”
“#AI machines aren’t ‘hallucinating’. But their makers are”
It seems that every other (or not every) earnings call will be splashed, soaked, and dripping with calls to integrate "AI". A-i this, a-i that. You might make a mistake and get a certificate in #adobe illustrator thinking it will boost your value to your employer, and you know what. You probably could get a raise if did that right about now.
It's so freaking insane. Even Robin Hood $Hood got a 4% bump ahead of the open because they said they would offer ai analytics to their customers. #ai
EDIT: LOL The messages you get while waiting are worth it all by themselves.
EDIT2: They've got a bunch of in-depth research pieces on the economic situation, agriculture, etc., and some data projects as well: https://longform.watchdog.team/
Google announced yesterday that many of its major products will have AI integration, which includes one of the most widely used sites, Google Search. As Big Tech companies battle for AI dominance, Europe is taking the lead with specific guardrails. Vox looks at what Washington is doing to protect Americans from AI's rapid advancement.
The #EU is on the verge of putting in place landmark #ai legislation that must resist the challenge of time and that steers the political debate at the global level.
As far as #AI is concerned, I have finally entered the chat, actively playing with it and making things happen. You'll hear them tomorrow.
A certain music triggers Bob's nostalgia when you wouldn't expect it to, an amusing clip from Monday, when Ray, Bob, and I hung out, and what will Bob no longer be doing on the show? Find out tomorrow on the Digital Domain at 2 PM EDT on #HKCRadio!
As the #PoliticalTech world continues to explore what role #AI can have in our organizing, it's vitally important that we don't simply wedge it between our work and our voters. It would be a great failure to Meet People Where They Are™ if we relegate supporters to talking with a robot instead of talking with us. Be more creative and intentional than chatbots and email generation. We cannot allow conveniences to further alienate us from the people we hope to reach and serve.
This is a story about #manufacturing competitiveness in the US.
About the Manufacturing USA initiative.
About the MxD innovation center in #Chicago (formerly known as DMDII).
And, about my frustrations that have festered for some time.
Out of respect for some of the people that I know personally that were employed there (who I will not name), this is a story that I had kept to myself for some time.
But now it is time to share, for a variety of reasons.
During the early years of the #Obama Administration, there were deep concerns over #China's outsized and entrenched role as being the "World's Factory Floor" and, more than that, their Made In China 2025 ambitions which was designed to springboard off that existing dominance into a spectrum of future manufacturing technologies like advanced automation, #robotics and #AI.
To say the least, the Obama Administration's concerns were very much ahead of the curve back then.
