@jon I've been there by special Finnish train about 5 years ago. I hope they will be able to make a solid #CrossBorderRail passenger service there with attractive connections between the Swedish standard and the Finnish broad-gauge world.
@wrzlbrnft Ah your transport was rather nicer than mine (my bike!)
But there is political will to make this work, so yes, I am hopeful for a reasonable solution, although of course there is not ever going to be enormous demand.
@jon Yay! I was already enthusiastic about the reintroduction of passenger service between Boden and Haparanda. But it was a bit annoying to have to walk with my backpack from Haparanda Station to Tornio Eastern :D
This was back in November 2021, so at least I skipped the Covid-19 related border checks: they weren't interested in pedestrians, they only checked people in cars :-P
@Niina I hope eventually they will send a portion of the Narvik night train to Haparanda. That'd be the neatest outcome. But so far that's not planned.
@Schleifleistenbruch We don't know yet. There is an argument ongoing about what might be subsidised, or not. We assume it will be some regionals from Oulu or Rovaniemi first of all.
@jon One quick idea: Let the sleeper to Kolari also stop at Haparanda. The necessary change of the direction of travel at Haparanda can then be used for the switch from electric to diesel engines.
@Schleifleistenbruch So there is a connecting line at Tornio - out of action according to Open Railway Map though. But are they going to electrify 1 or 2 track in Haparanda station? Plus the points layout looks a bit odd… (broad gauge is north side)
@Schleifleistenbruch@jon Might be easier to split off a group of through carriages at Kemi from one of the trains. Or do it in Oulu and run it with a few additional carriages as the morning local service from there.
