Damn I hate the #CrossBorderRail non-collaboration between HŽPP and SŽ

Both now have online ticketing

But only to the last station in their respective territories

So neither of them can sell Ilirkska Bistrica - Šapjane (line Pivka-Rijeka) or Rakitovec - Buzet (line Divača-Pula) - in both cases just a few km at the border 😡

Simple solution: include the first station in the neighbouring country in the national ticketing system…

SŽ can sell me a ticket only to Ilistrika Bistrica

@jon when I was there in 2019, there was a special fare Ljubljana-Rijeka which wasn't available online. I bought it for 9 euros at the ticket counter in Ljubljana.

... and then find you have to go to the ticket office in Sarajevo to collect a paper ticket! 🙂

And there was I thinking I could avoid a queue. Well, if there are even enough people wanting the once a day train to Maglaj, which according to Vagonweb runs with only 2 ancient carriages

Heute geht es weiter Richtung Rumänien.
Dazu wird am frühen Morgen des Karfreitag ein Desiro Richtung Добрич (Dobrich) bestiegen. Anfangs dieselt der etwas auf der elektrifizierten Strecke entlang des Hafens von Варна (Varna), die ich gestern schon kennengelernt habe.
Dann zweigt die Strecke nach rechts/Norden ab und die Oberleitung hört nach einigen Kilometern auf, wenn auch Oberleitungsmaste noch einige Kilometer weiter stehen.
Die Gegend rund um Добрич (Dobrich) ist eine sehr vom Ackerbau geprägte Landschaft, davon sieht man allerdings wegen der hohen Büsche links und rechts der Strecke eher weniger.
In Добрич (Dobrich) steht dann schon die gewünschte Lok - eine Ludmilla - bereit. Diese hat einen Kursschlafwagen aus София (Sofia) und einen Sitzwagen bereits eine gute Stunde eher aus Варна (Varna) hierher gebracht. Jetzt fährt dieser übermotorisierte Zug mich Richtung rumänische Grenze nach Кардам (Kardam). Der Schlafwagen fährt ab jetzt leer und verschlossen mit; dieser ist auch nur bis Добрич (Dobrich) buchbar.

Eine Materialseilbahn in hügeliger Umgebung.
Haltepunkt Ботево, als Unterstand dient eine Hütte aus frischem Wellblech.
Bahnhof Добрич (Dobrich). Links im Bild das hohe Empfangsgebäude in sozialistischem Stil, daneben eine Ludmilla mit zwei Wagen und ein Siemens Desiro Classic.

The train terminates at Кардам (Kardam) which is about 5 km from the Romanian border. The following part of the line in Bulgaria is still in acceptable condition, e. g. the railway crossing is still maintained.
After I had to answer some stupid questions by the Bulgarian border police, I made my way into Romania. Unfortunately, the railway line is not very close to the road in Romania. But my impression from the distance was that the tracks are still usable.
The first railway station in Romania is Negru Vodă which isn't served by trains anymore. The tracks were in poor condition and need a lot of repair if you want to run trains there again.

@jon hard to say. There are quite some busses from Negru Vodă to Mangalia and Constanţa, but apparently not a single one to Medgidia.
On the other hand, the area lives a lot from their agriculture. Thus, freight traffic may also help.

20 Minuten später. Die Grenzbeamtin hat einen Schwatz mit unserem Zugpersonal gehalten. Jetzt schaut sie sich lieber erst einmal einen Flüssiggas-Zug, der gerade aus Serbien gekommen ist, an.

@jon wir haben Niš gegen 21 Uhr verlassen, dementsprechend keine Fotos. Seitdem haben wir auch 15 km/h nicht überschritten, auch von Bauarbeiten fehlt bislang jede Spur.

And I am aware there is a contradiction here - I never really like it when famous Youtube channels try to examine topics, and you might legitimately say “OK Jon, do your own then!” but 1) I am lousy at video, and 2) likely have neither the time nor the money to get videos to have a major reach. @smveerman @NymeHess @jon zumindest bei dem vordersten Gleis sieht der Fahrdraht so dick aus, dass es sich da um Doppelfahrdraht handeln müsste. Dafür spricht auch die hohe Anzahl der Hänger.

Building the new platform at Haparanda 🇸🇪 is starting, to allow broad gauge trains from Tornio 🇫🇮 to arrive there https://www.lok-report.de/news/europa/item/48883-schweden-neuer-bahnsteig-in-haparanda-ermoeglicht-verkehr-aus-finnland.html

Having been to the station in 2022 I can confirm these works will be simple and quick - pretty much everything is there already

And electrification of the border bridge will start shortly as well

@jon One quick idea: Let the sleeper to Kolari also stop at Haparanda. The necessary change of the direction of travel at Haparanda can then be used for the switch from electric to diesel engines.

Sweden is having a very typical Swedish argument about their railways - how European do they want to be?

Should the carriages they want to order for trains to northern Sweden and Norway be built to the larger Swedish, or the smaller European loading gauge? https://jarnvagar.nu/politiker-vill-ha-bredare-sovvagnar/
