The thing I am most interested in is time travel. I would be real interested in connecting with people on mastodon that have same interests 👌🏾
I tried writing a book last year but lost interest. Need more inspiration 🙏🏿

@Jaden3 if you like retro rpg turn based games you should play Chrono Trigger. It's all about time traveling
One of my favourite video games of all time.

giarminio,

@Jaden3 "The penultimate truth" by Philip K. Dick, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Penultimate_Truth, includes time travels :)

I would suggest The Time Traveler's Almanac, a (huge!) short story anthology about time travel, collected by Ann and Jeff VanderMeer (relatively easy to find as well).
There's also Time Travel: A History, the book by @JamesGleick, about the evolution of the idea.

I wanna recommend @gregeganSF 's Orthogonal Trilogy for doing amazing things with the concepts of space and time.

Also @cstross 's Palimpsest for giving a long view of time travel implications.

It's amazing that some of my favorite authors are here on Mastodon and you can just notify them annoyingly when you like their work.

@Jaden3 I enjoyed the “Time Patrol” stories by Poul Anderson, including the novel, “Shield of Time.” I’m not sure if this is where I first heard the idea of time-like vs. light-like vs. space-like trajectories, but if you are going to go #FTL then you need to understand the causal implications of messing with world lines!

Just don't give up,
It doesn't matter what you write, just write, I think I've said before, I have kept a journal for most of my adult life!
That's twice your lifetime 😂
It's rubbish, but if you want to be a 'writer' you have to write 🥰

@DoubleTreble I lost my way but gonna start again I got nothing to lose.

Try doing what you want to before life and shit catches up with you!
Cos believe me it will!
You blink too many times and you're olldd !!!!

@Jaden3

I’ve been crafting a series of shorts focused on a person who time treats almost like a healer and whom time heals in return.

They operate namelessly out of humility and to leave as little a trace as possible.

No blue boxes smaller on the outside are involved.

@Aphrodite sounds good 👍🏾

Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five isn't sci-fi, but it does include time travel. It starts with "Billy Pilgrim has come unstuck in time."

JillsJoy,
@JillsJoy@NerdJoy.social avatar

@gdinwiddie @Jaden3 I think including aliens and time travel are the DEFINITION of sci-fi 😆

gdinwiddie,
@gdinwiddie@mastodon.social avatar

@JillsJoy @Jaden3
I think sci-fi should also talk about the science of the fiction. Slaughterhouse Five is pretty matter-of-fact about it. Even the Tralfamadorians don't explore how it works. It just is.

@gdinwiddie @Jaden3

For time travel stories, I'd also recommend Kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse Five" along with his novel "Timequake."

I learned a lot about myself while reading Vonnegut - including what a "humanist" was - but I want to caution against reading too many of his books in a row. They can be very sad, in a self-deprecating manner.

@Jaden3 I’m a short story guy. Try Ann Vandermeer’s The Time Traveler’s Almanac and Mike Ashley’s The Mammoth Book of Time Travel SF for some great stories.

estakkie,

@Jaden3 I was blown away by Michael Crichton's ' Timeline'; as an historian myself, I could sooo relate to the story!

Jaden3,
@Jaden3@mastodon.social avatar

@estakkie thank you. What is your favorite time travel novel. I have read so many but want some recommendations?

estakkie,

@Jaden3 other recommendations could be: the Timecop series, by Dan Parkinson; The Time Traveler's Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger; and Doomsday Book, by Connie Willis. These are suggestions by my partner, btw, I have only read the one mentioned earlier.

Jaden3,
@Jaden3@mastodon.social avatar

@estakkie thank you 😊

estakkie,

@Jaden3 oh, forgot one: 'To say nothing of the dog', also by Connie Willis.

@Jaden3 I love #TimeTravelAuthors and stories, Andria often think about the science that might be involved. Here are some illustrations I’ve collected to help me understand what is going on in these stories

An illustration of types of timelines. Three columns, each one describing the types of events and causality that are possible in each of the timelines. The three types of timelines are: Fixed Timeline, Dynamic Timeline, and Multiverse.

@Jaden3 Here is another diagram that I find helpful in understanding re the speed of light in. It depicts intervals. A cone is positioned on 3D axes. The vertical axis is time, two (for simplicity) horizontal axes are space. The narrowest point of the cone is at the origin; the here and now. inside the cone are called time-like. Outside the cone world lines are space-like. Time travel involves going from time-like to space-like world-lines.

meltedcheese,
@meltedcheese@c.im avatar

@Jaden3 is related to faster-than-light travel from inside to outside the spacetime interval light cone. It makes be dizzy trying to interpret multiple world lines using this chart 👆🏼, but it can be done. Have fun!
