Journalist Jonathan Katz fact checked Katie Britt’s horrific rape story from her over-the-top rebuttal.
Despite all the drama, it turns out to be a story that happened 20 years ago - and not in the U.S. but in Mexico. It’s a story that was recounted in Congressional testimony in 2015.

And let’s be honest, does it really matter if it happened in Mexico? If Trump had been allowed to put up his wall in 2004…when Bush was Pres, we wouldn’t have to hear these poor women’s stories and it would be like it never happened…to us…because she’d be in Mexico still. Shame on Joe Biden! Shame on him for exposing us to these atrocities!
@GottaLaff my thought when I heard Ms Britt talking was that in Texas where she supposedly met this poor gal, there are no abortions allowed, even for victims of human trafficking.

I think we should demand additional ethics laws for politicians. This is so outrageous that a Senator could blatantly lie like this in an official capacity. We have gotten used to it, but it's escalating. We should revise that "speech and debate" clause too. Congressional MAGAts are veering wildly into defamation, just look at the Hunter Biden BS "investigation". 🤬 Then there is the "Supreme" Court issue!! Utter corruption.

@GottaLaff A few years ago, republicans tried to belittle Jorge Ramos by labeling him an "advocate" and not a real journalist, but I ask you, what is the republican party now? They are advocates and not a real political party. Katie Britt's SOTU response is the latest evidence. Real politicians and real political parties work with facts, not lies.

@GottaLaff I've seen a few references (unhappy) to Biden using the term "illegals" and that was a mistake frankly ... but you get the feeling that he knew what was going to be in the rebuttal and Marge was telegraphing it on the floor (not subtle). So, he was trying to get on the front foot by engaging on the non-issue of 'immigrant crime' by putting it back on Republicans to solve by passing the bipartisan bill.
So Katie Britt, after hiding how fancy her kitchen was so she could claim to have worries, laid out an excellent case we should make it easier for women who've been sex trafficked to get amnesty in the US, and ALSO noted migration has been a problem for a decade?

I have to respectfully disagree with you, it’s not so much that Republicans have nuthin’ else to offer, it’s more that what they have to offer most voters don’t want. So they offer tax cuts but don’t mention those cuts are for the wealthy, they offer family values when their policies deprive women of bodily autonomy & access to IVF, they offer fear about crime but refuse to support red flag laws & background checks for gun buyers and they offer right to work laws instead of supporting livable minimum wages, family leave and child care. @KatM@NataliaArmyOf1@GottaLaff
@GottaLaff@emptywheel And what makes it even worse is that Katie Britt supports the RAISE Act (which would cap the number of legal refugees (including refugees from sex trafficking) the US would accept) and the misnamed Asylum Abuse Reduction Act (which would require abused children to somehow find their way to a US embassy to do a telephone interview in order to even apply for asylum, then wait in Mexico while their case is reviewed).
It's pathological to say you want to help teenagers forced into sexual slavery while also using your power to make it harder for them to get help.
