I love . My RSS feed reader is the page I visit most on web, I think. So it's very frustrating when folks update their site, but don't redirect their RSS feed - please remember to do it, people.

@kev Miniflux looks pretty interesting, I’m gonna give it a shot.

@kev is there an easy way to see how many people are using my site via RSS? (it’s hosted in GH pages)

kev,
@kev@fosstodon.org avatar

@kellogh Nope. It’s actually notoriously difficult.

@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@kev i had a thought that i could add a query parameter, but unsure how GH would handle that

@kev damn it Kev, I feel targeted 😛

kev,
@kev@fosstodon.org avatar

@flamed Haha no, not at all. I actually had 2 broken feeds this morning (again) and that’s what sparked this. 😂

@kev It’s also annoying when RSS entries have a title but no content

kev,
@kev@fosstodon.org avatar

@orangeacme Oh god yes! Luckily Miniflux has an option to pull the entire post from source.

@kev oh great point! When migrating from Blogger to 11ty recently I took care to keep page URLs alive, but the feed url I have forgotten to verify. I’ll have to update that and add to my migration steps checklist https://sheetsj.com/blog/migrating-blogger-to-eleventy/

Wivik,
@Wivik@fosstodon.org avatar

@kev How to know if the RSS feed maintainer updated it : my RSS reader spontaneously pop 30 articles for the feed. :blobfoxlaugh:

kev,
@kev@fosstodon.org avatar

@Wivik haha yeah, but at least you’re still subscribed. I’d rather have to “mark all as read” instead of go hunting for the new URL, or (even worse) miss the content entirely.

@kev I’ve been looking at different blogging platforms lately and one of the things I’ve been trying to to do is make sure my rss feed doesn’t break. I also find that mildly annoying.

I also wonder if a change like moving to a new platform confuses some feed readers and marks everything as unread.

I have a bunch of feeds as well, and I’ll bet at least once a month or so I’ll get one site that suddenly has 200 unread posts.

kev,
@kev@fosstodon.org avatar

@sudoedit It does. Every time I’ve changed platform subscribers contact me asking what platform I’ve changed to this time. They know before they get a dump of unread posts. :-)

Better that than potentially missing content though, I think.

@kev It's even more frustrating when blogs have no RSS feed at all. It seems incredible but it happens more than we may think.

kev,
@kev@fosstodon.org avatar

@amoroso Ah yeah, it does. I actually wrote about that a while ago…

@amoroso @kev If something doesn't have a feed it's not a blog; it's just a sparkling collection of dated web pages.

@edavies Totally agree.

@kev This was part of the reason I had to work this out for nginx too https://rknight.me/blog/creating-permanent-and-temporary-redirects-with-nginx/

kev,
@kev@fosstodon.org avatar

@robb Good thinking, Batman. I just added a link to this post in my post. :)

Between Apache and Nginx, I think that has the majority of folk covered.

jbaty,
@jbaty@social.lol avatar

@kev I made the mistake of always using the default feed of my current blogging tool, then redirecting the old one to /that/. I should've done what you suggest and just redirect to the original from day one. It's a mess.

kev,
@kev@fosstodon.org avatar

@jbaty You could have all the others redirect to /feed, then redirect /feed to whatever your feed URL is now. Only 2 redirects won’t impact performance.

jbaty,
@jbaty@social.lol avatar

@kev Good idea. Beats updating all of them every time.

jbaty,
@jbaty@social.lol avatar

@kev "every time" is something one should never have to say when talking about changing blogs. :)

kev,
@kev@fosstodon.org avatar

@jbaty hahaha I know, but it’s just so much fun!
