Google confirms they will disable uBlock Origin in Chrome in 2024 🤡

tdp_org,
@tdp_org@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft uBo is better on Firefox anyway due to the DNS API.
Moz FTW.
Also, don't forget DNS-based content blockers if you have or can get the kit - Raspberry Pi + AdGuard is great.

ludiofines,
@ludiofines@cyberplace.social avatar

@nixCraft @tdp_org this doesn't work with google though, hence the existence of uBO.

tbroyer,
@tbroyer@piaille.fr avatar

@ludiofines @nixCraft @tdp_org How's that not working? My Pi-Hole at home blocks all ads afaict.

ludiofines,
@ludiofines@cyberplace.social avatar

@tbroyer @nixCraft @tdp_org well pihole is dns aware only and google uses same domain for ads and for vids.

tbroyer,
@tbroyer@piaille.fr avatar

@ludiofines @nixCraft @tdp_org You're only talking about Youtube right?

(wrt doh/dot, Chrome uses the machine's DNS resolver by default AFAIK, and if not the default it's easy to change)

milosz,

@tdp_org @nixCraft I switched back from AdGuard to Pi-hole as it provides better support for custom domains, but AdGuard is smaller and simpler.

gideonstar,
@gideonstar@mastodon.gideonstar.de avatar

@nixCraft But I love Chrome so much. It has:

  • customization features
  • self hosted sync server
  • low memory

Oh wait, that's Firefox.

pi_crew,

@nixCraft good times for @mozilla ahead :)

thejacenallen,
@thejacenallen@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft bye bye chrome

desertplains,
@desertplains@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft It's been a while that I use @bravebrowser , and I'm happy, so far (no ads).

proves to be this disgusting tech business that we always thought it was.

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@nixCraft Oh dear, I guess Firefox is going to get a lot of new fans in the coming month :laughcry:

wadewainio,
@wadewainio@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft ut what if Chrome was to die in 2027? I know some people will quit using it, if it keeps pushing people away.

catavz,
@catavz@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft I have never used Chrome. Firefox and maybe Chromium on PC, Firefox focus and Firefox on Android.

Terminhell,
@Terminhell@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft the bigger issue with this is from a security stand point. Google itself, allowing malicious ads to be sco'd and placed even on their own platforms is the biggest reason I use blockers. And, let's not forget all the porn ads that still show up on YouTube kids.

vadhakara,
@vadhakara@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft This is going to massively increase the workload of the IT department at almost every company and government office in the world. Ads are THE major vector for malware in organizations that are otherwise competently protected.

AtanasE,
@AtanasE@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft Best publicity ever

CocoIchibanYa,

@nixCraft And users like me will disable Chrome on our computers. Extremely shortsighted move by Google.

celinho,
@celinho@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft It's not even close to being able to use Chrome yet in 2023. Deserves a wooden beating

foxmask,
@foxmask@framapiaf.org avatar

@nixCraft don't care what will happen to chrome as I use FF +uBlock since age and now proton VPN to enforce the fight 😁

18+ Allkinds,
@Allkinds@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft

Another reason to not use google. #google

yeechie,

@nixCraft Hopefully more people will now switch to Firefox or Librewolf.

imacdowell,

@nixCraft meanwhile

Methylcobalamin,
@Methylcobalamin@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft Chrome is spyware to start with.

    D1G1TALPR0PH3T,

    @nixCraft I am all in on Firefox. Best browser out. @mozilla

    Williamfonseca,

    @nixCraft mozilla firefox

    Ohly,

    @nixCraft Happy Firefox noises

    schizanon,

    @nixCraft if they touch SmartTube I will set my Google TV on fire

    tbroyer,
    @tbroyer@piaille.fr avatar

    @nixCraft Fwiw, I feel like uBlock Origin Lite might be all that I need.

    stonedonkey,

    @nixCraft the problem is Google blocking extensions that block ads is it pisses off the people who have the technical know how to change browsers.

    I understand why they think this is a good idea, but it seems incredibly short sighted.

    There's reasons people jumped to chrome why give them reasons to jump off.
