Timberline Trail Backpacking: Day 1

Hiking the Timberline Trail this weekend, which circumnavigates Mount Hood. Currently hiking CCW from Timberline Lodge to Elk Cove. Knocking out about half of the mileage today to relax the next two days. I slipped in Newton Creek and soaked my right foot. Having a great time though, so good to be back out in the wilderness!

A view of Mount Hood from the Timberline Trail. Glaciers surround the peak. Rocky trail on the side of Newton Canyon.
Upper Heather Canyon Falls along the Timberline Trail on Mount Hood. Smallish waterfall surrounded by trees on the left side and bushes on the right.
Mount Adams from the Timberline Trail on Mount Hood. Some snow on the peak with a forest in the foreground.

@andrewbriscoe Mt. Hood, my love! And wow, all the way to Elk Cove in a single day! Isn't that like 30 miles or so? You also must have come past Cloud Cap Inn. I went up Tilly Jane to top of Cooper Spur some years ago and always dreamed about doing the whole Timberline trail. Maybe still one day... Thank you for sharing these beautiful views & moments! 🙏🫶

God rays are breaking through the trees just below the treeline on the way to Cooper Spur (half way up on the east side of Mt. Hood). A path is leading through the (volcanic) ash covered snow in the foreground.
View of a snowy Mt. Hood from near Timberline Lodge. Small groups of firs are standing in the spur leading up toward the summit. Bright blue sky.

@toxi Glad to share, i’m having a great time while taking photos and hiking. It was just over 20 miles and 4800 elevation gain so i’m exhausted. The trail north of cloud cap and especially coming up from Eliot Creek was dealing with a lot of down trees in the baking sun.

@toxi Thank you! It’s sad to see but all I can do is try to make the best of it and enjoy nature.

@andrewbriscoe Absolutely! The sight of new life growing between and on top of the dead trees is maybe even more extra special to witness. Recently I watched some videos about the re-opening of Eagle Creek and even though there's damage still visible everywhere, the valley seems to recover more quickly than I thought...
