fabio, It’s been almost 3 months since #Threads joined the Fediverse family. A quick overview of what changed since then:
- The hordes of Nazi/homophobic users from the outside world into our safe islands are nowhere to be seen. I was insulted multiple times a couple of months ago, along the lines of “if you don’t proactively defederate Threads then you’re an asshole who does nothing to protect the marginalized minorities on the Fediverse from the outside world!“. Well, guess what, it turns out that not everyone outside of our comfort zone is a pathological jerk craving for psychological abuse. It turns out that the minorities police over-reacted. And it turns out that the whole Fedipact thingy was probably collective hysteria.
- The Threads-Fedi sync is still an opt-in feature, and only available to accounts in selected countries. And posting responses from the Fediverse to a Threads post isn’t supported yet. I’m not sure if they are ever going to change that, but given the lack of announcements in these months I’m wondering if anybody at Meta is even bothering to work on this integration, or if it was just about another loud announcement for what was a time-bound experiment with no follow-ups.
- Threads itself, after reaping the initial novelty benefits, is losing momentum. No E-E-E on the horizon for now.
Result: I added a couple of Threads accounts to my list, I see their content on my timeline every now and then as if they were just another Fediverse instance (but one that I can’t directly interact with), end of the story.

kerim, Article by Rest of the World on how popular #Threads is for young protesters in #Taiwan
"freshly created political communities could be fragile as Meta promises to reduce the amount of political content users can see. Facebook began limiting political content in 2021, and Meta said this year that Instagram and Threads would also stop recommending political content, unless it came from accounts users were following."

_elena, 🌶️ take of the day:
People on #Threads rave about its new Tweetdeck-like web client... which is limited to a few default columns. No list support.
Meanwhile #Mastodon has:
- lists
- real (+ multiple) hashtag support
- a chronological feed
- a PHENOMENAL web client (@cheeaun's @phanpy)
- brilliant 3rd party apps like @ivory and @IceCubesApp
AND it doesn't rely on advertising or #surveillancecapitalism.
I swear I'm gonna make it my mission to get my old network to move over here
sgryphon, Just checked a few other instances, and wondering why so many are blocking #threads. That's like having your email provider block Gmail, and a very weird thing to do in my opinion. Is it just fear/uncertainity/not understanding how Mastodon/ActivityPub works?
LouisIngenthron, @sgryphon No, it's mostly just a knee-jerk reaction due to the fact that many instance admins and users hate Meta with a burning passion.
xepher, @tuneintodetuned Since you're using Mastodon, there's a feature that allows you to mute RT from users in your feed but still see their own posts. I have this set up for a handful of users that I enjoy their personal content but they get super spammy with their RTing.
tuneintodetuned, @xepher
Very true. 👌
The second point I mentioned is what determined me, though.
cheeaun, Screenshots comparing columns UI between Threads.net and Phanpy.social
box464,
timbray, @cheeaun It's an interesting problem. “Home” doesn’t say what it is, it says (sort of) where it is. It could reasonably be called “Start” or “Latest” something like that. “Following” does say what it is (I like that) and you’re right, Threads highlighted that. Except for I’m pretty sure that Threads “Following” page is still algorithmically modified, not just chronological.
wjmaggos, Have any government folks enabled fedi sharing on #threads? Or official news org accounts? Looking at journalists and pundits etc, it feels completely random (and strangely limited). I see no pattern.
jerome, @wjmaggos there’s a list here by @mpjgregoire
mpjgregoire, @jerome @wjmaggos
I really thought we'd see more organisations with #Threads accounts enabling sharing to the #Fediverse by now. I understand that if you're looking for conversation that it's not so useful for someone on Threads, but if you're essentially broadcasting, then why not let as large an audience as possible follow you?
iamdtms, My first (and only one) post on #Threads:
https://www.threads.net/
jynersolives, The "federation" of #Threads hasn't brought about the Fedipocalypse, has it?
kagan, @jynersolives I don't think anyone* was arguing that it would happen within a few months. The alarm is that Threads is the beginning of an Embrace, Extend, and Extinguish campaign, and those typically take years. We shouldn't expect any major problems this soon.
- okay, maybe a few overly-alarmist people who didn't really understand the situation, but not by any means the main bulk of people against Threads/Meta
jynersolives, @kagan There is no EEE „campaign“. That’s just hyperbole.
lucamondini, Italian Come va?
#threads #fediverso #mastodon #nostr #mostr #bluesky #MastodonUno
lucamondini, Italian @filippodb grazie Filippo. Come dicevo a Quinta, il mio obiettivo è proprio quello. :)
cheeaun, 👀 So, this is what they've been working on: https://www.threads.net/@mosseri/post/C7CXVYIpI0G
Article: https://techcrunch.com/2024/05/16/threads-testing-pinned-columns-on-the-web-like-tweetdeck/
Observations, judging from screenshots:
- It allows pinning accounts 🤔
- It introduces gray background to fill the white space for this layout instead of the single-column version 🤷♂️
- Corner radius got way more rounded, including the images/videos, for some reason…
- Make sense for them to build it as there won't be any 3rd-party #Threads clients.
box464, @cheeaun It looks familiar somehow. Catch up next? 🧐
cheeaun, @box464 they already have 'For you', so… don't think it'll be next 🤔 Lists probably make more sense 🤔
dansup, threads new pinned columns design is gorgeous
developerjustin, I want to be more active about encouraging #Threads users to federate.
To that end, I asked @nationalkidneyfoundation to federate this morning and bring their good work around kidney disease and transplant to the #fediverse.
Welcome, @nationalkidneyfoundation!
freezr, A little bird told me that when #Threads will be totally into #ActivityPub then #Mastodon will mysteriously lose the ability to block entire domains/servers... 🐦
mobileatom, Threads is testing cross-posting from Instagram globally. #Threads #Instagram

multiverseofbadness, My quick reaction on #Threads after one day -
No shocker - I hate the way it incorporates with the #fediverse as a whole and, at least currently, feels like it's working in (ish) bad faith.. that may change, but for now they are simply using us as potential eyeballs to boost their engagement numbers (esp for their "big accounts")
BUT...
From my experience, it beats the absolute pants off of #BlueSky in terms of actual "topic" interaction
Your miles may vary...
multiverseofbadness, There are toxic folk here for sure, but the majority seem to leave quickly because of a smaller userbase, domain blocking, and unwillingness to "feed" them.
I have a small but great handful of folks I'm quite active here with .. it's sadly reduced over the last year, but the interaction here for me has always been more positive as a whole.. think I'll hang a round a bit longer.. 😂
Tim_Eagon, @multiverseofbadness @jacklaridian There's a strong core here that can be foundational for later, but some folks have left and some check-in periodically (I turn on notifications for when they post, so I don't miss them).
darren, Is anyone aware of a bot that counting the number of federated #Threads accounts? Just curious about the #Fediverse uptake by Threads users. Out of their puported hundred million users, I would anectdotally guess about 1000 users have voluntarily federated, but maybe you know better than me?
FinchHaven, There is this, for what it's worth
"Popular Fediverse Accounts: The most popular accounts across the fediverse"
Here: https://fedidb.org/popular-fediverse-accounts
It claims to cover both #Threads and the #Fediverse / #Mastodon
I can't comment on the accuracy or credibility of the data collection methods used
darren, @FinchHaven I may have to roll my own bot. I'd like to know generally how many #Threads accounts have voluntarily federated. It seems to me that very few have.
darnell, Yay! My #Flipboard account is federating: @darnell
Like #Threads & #Ghost, Flipboard is beta testing #ActivityPub on its main site.
I believe Flipboard will prove to be a counterweight to Threads and a prime location for news & pundits (as #Meta does not really desire the latter two on their platforms).
badrihippo, Found this in the wild. It links to a #Threads account 👀
https://robkendal.co.uk/blog/how-to-build-a-restful-node-js-api-server-using-json-files/
Noptisun, @badrihippo isnʼt even federated yet.
badrihippo, @Noptisun lol!
salvomic, Italian
lifeofguenter, #threads is now properly working with #convocasa - I did not do anything so must have been something in their side. Thanks @paul for debugging back then though.
paul, @lifeofguenter
👍 You're welcome.Glad things are working.
twen, French Now that #threads is connected to ActivityPub, looking at the most popular accounts : the top 20 contains 13 Threads accounts ! Most, if not all are americans. What a diversity 😐 https://fedidb.org/popular-fediverse-accounts #fediverse
wjmaggos, Why isn't @ezraklein federating? #threads
jglypt, @wjmaggos Yeah I don’t have the option, but tbf on the website you sent, the screenshot says ‘beta’ so probably rolling out.
wjmaggos, I didn't know till I read the article but it's only US, Canada and Japan for now. but it should be everyone there afaik.
