@ColinTheMathmo You're doing this manually? That's dedication. I'm pleased to report that I think I can infer the history of the game, and it's quite cool to see it laid out schematically. Can't say I fancy the Netherlands' chances. One question though: what are the diagonal orange straight lines?
@ianRobinson Most of the American bowling had no deviation at all. Almost from the first over, the Canadians were getting a little swing, but not a lot.
Not sure if that was changing conditions or just different skill sets.
Fellow Americans, if you go to a Cricket match at a stadium and come in possession of the ball during the match, you are required to throw the ball back on to the field. And quickly.
You don't get to keep the ball. It ain't baseball.
@ianRobinson@smurthys One example of how the lack of understanding played out was when Jomboy said something like, "I see the wicketkeeper move around a lot. In baseball the catcher knows what the pitcher is going to pitch, how do wicket keepers know what the bowler is throwing?
I think ( I believe it was Ian Bishop) not realizing that catchers and pitchers exchange hand signals, wasn't able to formulate a helpful response contrasting the two approaches, and just fell back on “experience.”
It's weird hearing the ambulance sirens on the cricket commentary and in real-time from my desk.
I was given out caught behind at Stormont one night as an ambulance was passing. The bloody umpire gave me out when there was no way he could have heard a thin nick over the noise of the siren about 80m away on the road. I didn’t hit it!
Just seen 12 runs scored of a single ball. Never seen that before.
Bowler messed up a delivery and the ball bounced twice. That’s a no ball: 2 runs and a free hit.
The batter is still allowed to hit the no ball. He hit it for 4. Total of 6.
A no ball must be bowled again. And it’s a free hit which means the batter can’t be out directly from that ball (they can be run out). Anyway, the batter hit the free hit for 6.
@smurthys@jtwcornell91 It’s been 2 in competitions I’ve been watching on YouTube recently. It’s down to the playing conditions of each competition it seems. Base rule is 1.
@ianRobinson In the US, I need to pickup Willow every summer to catch the IPL, The Hundred, (this year) the T20 WC, (maybe the MLc), some of the Big Bash, misc other matches… then I let it go again as the season ebbs.
It's a bit cold and gloomy at the Oval, so I'm in the Alcock Balcony, which never gets sun but is at least shielded from the wind and rain. I would also like to welcome our Tripod overlords to the #cricket. 🏏 #CountyChampionship
@ianRobinson There's three devices plus the camera for the streaming. I think the near one might be the speed gun because it's bang in line with the pitch. The two white ones are slightly off-centre.
"My dad pulled up YouTube when I was young and that's how it started. To stop me bowling with a bent arm and no balls, he said, 'Bowl like Jeff Thomson and you won't have that problem'."
