Eeek. Gloucestershire scored 706 for 6 declared!

We’ll need a subcommittee to investigate that! https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/scorecard/ECKE1217494

@ianRobinson It's the first time that Gloucestershire have scored more than 700 in a first class innings.

@rugby #WALvSCO That was crazy. At 0-27 Scotland panicked when Wales threatened and only recovered their composure in the last few minutes. They probably didn't deserve to score in final moments and Wales probably didn't deserve to win across the whole 80 minutes. The score feels about right. Both coaches will probably be very unhappy. Wales have something to build on before their trip to Twickenham. Scotland need to learn to keep cool heads while still taking their chances.

@rugby #WALvSCO Half time and little (nothing?) has worked for Wales. Scotland have been much the better side and deserve the 0-20 scoreline. Gatland has always made the most of limited resources. Has he lost his touch or are his resources more limited than ever? Wales need to cut out the errors, but I think they need to do something different from what they've tried so far. If Scotland keep doing what they did in the first half it's difficult to see Wales getting anything out of the game.

@rugby Italy well worth their lead but England have got better after a slow start. Italy's second try was very well taken but the English defence was absent. It's anybody's game but it's good to see Roots and Freeman looking good for England - perhaps an indication of a less boring future.

#RugbyUnion @rugby #BRIvBAT I cannot believe the game I've just watched. Bristol 57 Bath 44. Bris were well up at half time, 33-15. Bath fought back hard in the second and came within a whisker of winning. A late penalty and converted try at the death secured the win and denied Bath a second bonus point. Defence was largely optional for both sides.

Derby weekend in the Premiership kicking off tonight with Bath v Bristol. At half time Bath lead 17-7. Some decent moments from Bris but some pretty dreadful defence as well. Also blown a try scoring opportunity. In truth this is Bath's game to lose. #BATvBRI

upbristol,
@upbristol@ohai.social avatar

@rugby Bristol played much better in the second half but Bath held on to win 20-19. A couple of missed kicks cost Bris. A single bonus point is a poor return for the second half performance but the first half was really costly.

@sethjnz @rugby They had a game plan that came within a whisker of working. It was tight, it was exciting and full of great skill from both sides. None of those things were true of last night. The All Blacks were excellent but the game was pretty dull. Today's game had everybody on the edge of their seats, those who wanted England to win, those who wanted England to lose and those who wanted the Springboks to win.

@YurkshireLad @rugby That's a very real possibility. If they do they'll win and deserve it. On the other hand...

Wow, six penalties, no tries.

If they continue like that the half finals should have been skipped after the amazing games in the quarters.
If I compare todays and yesterdays game against NZvIE and FRvSA this is just boring...

@rugby The half time lead, coupled with a good defensive display from Bristol, gave Bris the win. Leicester won the second half but Bris always had enough. MacGinty's injury was important but Bris responded well.

Yikes. The Netherlands have Pakistan 252 for 8 with only 6 overs to bat. I don’t know if The Netherlands can bat. But if they beat Pakistan it’ll be huge.

upbristol,
@upbristol@ohai.social avatar

@ianRobinson It'll be big. I've not been following the game but I'll wager that if Netherlands win it'll be because, in large measure, Pakistan beat themselves. Then they'll win the rest of the matches to win the final.

#GreatAlbums1960s - #HerbieHancock – Maiden Voyage (1965). Breezier and more subtle than the boogaloo hits (“Watermelon Man,” etc.) behind Hancock’s 60s stardom, Maiden Voyage evokes oceanic excursions, blustering storms, and dancing sea mammals on “Maiden Voyage,” “The Eye of the Hurricane” and “Dance of the Dolphins.” Hancock’s Miles Davis compatriots (Ron Carter, Tony Williams) support Freddie Hubbard’s trumpet and George Coleman’s sax solos with grooves relaxed as sea air.

@thomas_liekens @rugby Probably not very realistic, but not impossible. The Azurri have been improving and the All Blacks are not the outstanding team they usually are. It would be a shock, but most rugby fans would cope - and possibly gloat just a little bit.

@cyclotopie @rugby The ball was in the maul. If it's not coming out then it's turned over. This is what the referee thought. The ball came out on the South African side as he blew the whistle. No ITV commentary did not explain this; they just got excited about the result.

I wish I could just pay for a cricket channel on Sky Sports/NowTV. I have zero interest in any of their other marquee sports offerings.

@ianRobinson I agree. It would be rugby union and cricket for me. The problem being that Sky, TNT or whoever pay so much for Premier League football that the rest of us have to pay for it to watch our favoured sports.

@rugby At half time France have a lead but will not be particularly happy with either score or performance. Uruguay on the other hand, in spite of struggling in some areas, will feel that they're doing OK. They've defended well and will believe that they're well in the game. France will want to get better by cutting out mistakes and focusing on the basics to close Uruguay out in the second half.

@rugby #RWC2023 #ENGvARG

Well, that was a surprise. England 27 Argentina 10.

England did what England do very well. It's not pretty, it's not especially creative, it's not particularly exciting but it worked. Perhaps it mainly worked today because Argentina were dreadful. If they'd managed to score earlier as they did right at the end there might have been a different outcome.

This win will encourage England as they prepare to face Japan next week. Argentina have two weeks to get over today.

upbristol,
@upbristol@ohai.social avatar

@sethjnz @rugby I'm afraid England are boring. Fortunately for the game they'll only win a few games playing like that. Also fortunately for the game we have France, New Zealand, Scotland, Australia, South Africa et al to remind us what a beautiful game this can be.

jacqui76, (edited ) to random

If Farrell replaces Ford when he becomes available for . They are not gonna win a match considering all of points & this victory is thanks to Ford's kicking ability!!

It might make everyone feel better after England's recent performances but is it really good enough?

Also, will this work against a top-tier team?? Who will pressure England alot more than this team has!

upbristol,
@upbristol@ohai.social avatar

@jacqui76 Well, Argentina are a top tier team - even though they didn't play like it. But, no, playing like that won't win the RWC for England. It'll probably get them out of the pool and into the knock out phase. They might get lucky and reach the semi final. They'll need to find an ability to play rugby to get beyond that.
