Here's my take on the Recall crapware that's been added to Windoze:

  • Recall will make use of on-device processing for some time, if/when "incompatible" Copilot+PCs receive support, the learning will be processed on a server.

  • Local processing will "become" an opt-in feature (because why not) and cloud processing (read: data-mining) becomes the default.

  • Local processing becomes a paid feature ( i.e the "Pro/Plus" tier) and is no longer available for regular users.

  • Users enjoy using Windows 11 despite knowing that literally everything they do on their computers (which IMO was never theirs from the start - if they've been using Windows) is up for grabs

  • now not only can Microsoft get access to all your data, heckers can too (how very generous of Microsoft)

And I forgot the important part (the part that I truly wish happens)

  • more and more users switch to #GNU+Linux. #Linux has only gotten so much better over the years, and even pain points like Nvidia, Wayland etc are becoming increasingly rare.

Switch to #freesoftware today! Use software where you're the user, not the used!

It's a little sad that people have realised this late that #windows is horrible, but it's never too late to switch to a better operating system. Switch to #Linux today! It respects your privacy and has so much choice.

I am once again getting the urge to install EndeavorOS but I... only use it to run firefox on it.

Seriously, this is the biggest reason I stopped using Linux; I don't actually use it for anything but browsing the web since gaming just is so much more convinient on Windows and I'm not into Linux for ideological reasons (yet).

I ALSO stopped because the number of bat shit racist libertarians on Linux forums I frequented were souring the experience. But that's another matter.

I admit I'm quite a free software fan. But I maintain my stance. No free software is bad. Some no free software is acceptable - but if you use no free software when there are better free alternatives available, that's the problem.

Does anyone know of easy ways to configure #Latex in #Emacs (on #Archlinux) ? I've compiled Emacs with the PGTK option if that helps.

Oh, and how do I export these Org docs to a PDF? Do I also require Latex packages for these, or is pandoc-bin enough? I don't want to bloat my system with too many packages, and so I'd love minimal solutions.

I've had a scroll through the packages available for Homebrew, and I've decided to not do a video about using it on Linux, at least for now. Most of the packages, at least from my brief look, are development packages.

There are some good command line stuff in there, but I don't think I can do anything in a video that would add value.

@thelinuxcast it's a package manager for MacOS. We're better of using the native ones, or even flatpak and snaps. I don't think it's viable (or even possible) to port/recompile all the macOS software available in Homebrew over to GNU+Linux.

Anyone know if there is an alternative to Latte Dock that works on Wayland? The default #plasma panel is very restrictive when it comes to look and feel.

@thelinuxcast Latte works on Wayland IIRC (an env var might help?). I don't use it because it doesn't work properly (or at all) with window managers

The "I'm new to Github guy" is an absolute asshole but is actually completely right, all the developers coping right now that Github is a dev platform are wrong. If you only release your app on Github it's no longer just a development platform it's also distribution one

Question for the distro hoppers: Still reading this Linux book and it has a weird line "On Linux there's often a group called sudoers", my understanding is this is a Debianism, and most distros instead have a wheel group, is that correct?

@BrodieOnLinux the Debians have a sudo group, and the Arches have a wheel group. But because all users of the group can use sudo, the groups are colloquially referred to as the sudoers groups. And of course, there's the /etc/sudoers file...

So I tried to build hyprland from source, but it failed and cpp errors confuse the fuq out of me. Give me C any day. If Kitty had syntax highlighting for the errors it would have been easier.

@adamsdesk I didn't verify, but since the ISO loads properly when I dd-ed it to the USB, I guess it's not an issue. Yes, I am using Ventoy 1.0.97 on #Arch.

Today marked my first ever “big” issue with Linux and Nvidia: for some reason, the dedicated GPU was no longer detected after an update.

Easy fix though, I just uninstalled / reinstalled the drivers. Still, not a good experience when you’re trying to edit a video…
