I'm a biker, person who likes to make things, opinionated tech worker on the wrong side of the cloud, foss enthusiast. I tend to talk about my personal life, politics, occasional discourse. I like RPGs and video games. And of course I have weird fascinations with pigeons and submarines.

Just spent more time than I'd like to admit creating my own game covers for the games I'll play on my :blobcatderpy:

@joel I just watched a review for Koudelka yesterday and thought it looked like such an interesting game, just a shame it seems like it would be so awkward and long!

If you've never read a very old book, like something written 90 to 300 years ago, you should! The language is so wild and raw, original prints have typos. I just think there's something so much more creative about how words are used when the rules of the language are more like guidelines.

@joel Frankenstein is better and has a deeper message. Dracula is, in the most affectionate possible way, wonderful trashy fiction.

zeska,
@zeska@fosstodon.org avatar

@joel it sort of loosely taps into a Christian fear and uncertainty about what existed before that moral framework. I don't think it's a mistake or coincidence that Dracula as a character was situated both geographically and in time of being on the border of where Christianity took hold in Europe. I dunno, I might be talking nonsense lol.

Am I too vocal about my identity and lived experience or am I not vocal enough? I wonder if it's noise when it comes up in your feed or if it makes you pause and read.

So I took my newly bought device to the nearby highest hill overlooking the whole city of Poznań and... nothing. No one else was on the network. That is disappointing to say the least.

I think I'll try now with a slightly larger antenna, and then I'll go to the city and try again.

I have complicated feelings about who I'm connecting with on here because while I really love you all I also don't necessarily want to spend my time and attention on the same politics and discourse as some of the demographics I'm connected with on here.

It's ok to disagree and be different in our world views to one another but I feel like the tolerance for different perspectives is assymetrical sometimes. I don't know. Am I imagining that?

zeska,
@zeska@fosstodon.org avatar

@joel I guess the question is how do you weigh up spending time outside of your comfort zone against continuing to follow people who are going to amplify content that makes you feel alienated from them?

Biking is an important part of my life in this regard because it puts me in touch with people who aren't like me being a culture that seems to bridge every class and demographic here in the uk (even if it is a little male dominated..)

The sudden realisation that legacy databases were made for spinning disks and designed around the principle that you were probably waiting for a physical disk to make revolutions so why not optimise by making a complex query there and then while you're at it?

Have the principles really changed I wonder?

@simon people get approvals from their mates and people who they think won't challenge them/will be conflict avoidant. If you don't participate in the same culture your performance looks terrible by comparison. Prisoner's dilemma.

Can't help but feel json-schema is a bit redundant as a concept. If you need a language for defining the structure of an unstructured data markup language, why not just define your own data markup language specialised for your application?

I don't see why everything needs to be JSON.

Boring / question: can I disconnect this bathroom fan and make it safe just by removing the fuse from the switch box?

Or do I need to fully disconnect it from the ceiling rose, where it draws its power?

OR is it more complicated than either of those?

I'm nervous of DIY electrics, but also broke - would rather not have to call a sparky for something this trivial. But I will if this is more complex than I think.

[Don't answer unless you genuinely know please]

zeska,
@zeska@fosstodon.org avatar

@girlonthenet @TRodick93 hold on I'm not so sure!

Pulling a fuse breaks the circuit and no current can flow between live and neutral wires, correct.

But current can still flow between neutral and ground. I think it's always safest to disconnect BOTH neutral and live using the red switch in most breaker boxes.
