Lamborghini has realized that the 0–60 war is over, and AWD electrics won.

Having said that, I literally do not care about 0–60 times. I hardly ever launch my cars. In fact I experience my cars almost entirely in every way except launching them.

We’ve reached the end point of launch times. What’s next? Sub-one second? Are people really seeking 3+ gs of forward acceleration? How much until it becomes too painful to endure for 80% of your buyers?

The joy of driving lies elsewhere. 0–60 times are irrelevant, because that problem is now essentially solved.

@drahardja I admit I've stopped caring about experiencing my cars based on how fast they can go and started caring about how rarely I can experience them in the first place.

It's not for everyone, but being places and doing things has turned out to be more important and interesting than getting to those places and things. Time I spend in the car is time I could've spent actually doing something I enjoy.

wordshaper,
@wordshaper@weatherishappening.network avatar

@drahardja Some people love that, which is cool! I just find these days that person isn't me. Being places is great, but getting to places is mostly just a chore, and if I don't have to drive to get somewhere that's even better. (to the point where I'd take a walk somewhere over driving there, though sadly there are relatively few places close enough that's an option)

I am really, really curious to see what Apple's Mac sales numbers look like in calendar Q3. Microsoft really seems to be running a massive ad campaign for them.

Helion Energy always seemed kinda sketchy, what with the pretty wild claims (and the nobody-dying-from-neutron-radiation thing, despite the lack of shielding around their "test fusion reactors") but I still had some hope that maybe they were on to something. But... nope, Sam Altman's involved and frankly that's about a half dozen giant red flags made up of millions of tiny red flags.

IANAL, but I'm pretty sure that if Adobe wanted their legal agreement to say something other than what it does that they'd update the legal document rather than issuing a press release.

I’d say I was surprised at the amount of fraud and grift in the whole AI thing, but frankly I’m mostly just disappointed at how pedestrian and unimaginative it all is. https://geeknews.chat/@theregister/112571909664838988

There is no company I'm aware of where the CEO, or any of the C-suite staff, needs to be paid millions of dollars, or more, to do their job. Guaranteed you can find someone in the company (probably many someones) who are perfectly capable of doing it. Possibly (in many cases likely) better than the current C-suite people.

(The only time to pay more is if everyone in the company is paid a lot because there's huge amounts of revenue, and even then it should be proportional)

Today's random design #ProTip -- you should always put a sacrificial bikeshed in any design document when you have basic consensus on or the choice is inevitable. It'll save everyone a huge amount of time and hassle.

Very much this. There are several very simple fixes (removing the cap, for example) that would make social security work fine for another fifty or sixty years. Plus the “fund it from the general fund” option. https://glammr.us/@TeamMidwest/112565286288096737

Some random useful things I have learned from my first attempt at danish making:

  1. Pastry cream works really well as a filling if you don't want to mess with sweetened cheese
  2. Pastry cream does get a bit thicker when baked so it's fine to start out with a not-totally-firm cream
  3. Pastry cream flavor doesn't really change, so alternate flavors (like lemon or apple) should work fine
  4. Jams do get a bit thicker/sweeter, so removing seeds from raspberry jam's a good idea.

wordshaper,

  1. A base of pastry cream with jam overtop works better than just jam or just pastry cream -- the mix of textures is nice
  2. You don't need a lot of layers in the pastry. Three turns is plenty.
  3. King Arthur's danish recipe is good, but halve everything, it makes a lot
  4. The 'round things into a ball then flatten' thing? Yeah, no, just roll things out flat and cut into squares
  5. The traditional glaze drizzle's not really worth it unless you have a sweet tooth

2/N

wordshaper,
@wordshaper@weatherishappening.network avatar
  1. the pastry is phenomenally better fresh out of the oven. Much better than next-day, which is how you've probably had these. Seriously, amazing.
  2. Re , don't say anything, if folks don't realize then they'll enjoy the pastry more because even next day they're still really good
  3. Like with croissants, use european style butter, cultured if you can. Easier to work with, and tastier
  4. Hand lamination's not a big deal. These aren't croissant, they don't need the same flakiness.

3/N

wordshaper,
@wordshaper@weatherishappening.network avatar
  1. Most dough spicing will be wasted if it's mixed in. If you want cinnamon/cardamom/raspberry/whatever dough I'd put it in between the layers on the third, or possibly second, turn.

Anyway, making these is a bit time consuming, but not hard. 10/10, will absolutely make danish again. Next time, though, either with lemon pastry cream topped with lemon curd, or hard cider pastry cream topped with chunked apple goo. (both of which should be excellent, and also cause for an office visit)

This is so, so true. Regular, boring level 2 charging is more than enough for nearly every charging use case. It’s reasonably simple and inexpensive to install, and frankly we should do a lot more. And if workplaces provided it, the load would even be at peak solar times. https://mas.to/@TechConnectify/112564967396485491

My charge from last night on a 30A charger (7.2 kW at 240V).

This is why I'm always harping on the "stop installing giant charger circuits" thing! Even this is a luxury - I only charge about weekly or if I make a long trip.

For USians, a 10 gauge run of wiring will deliver 5 kW sustained. You'll only ever think that's slow if you drive a TON and/or have a really big vehicle.

Especially if you're thinking of DIYing an install, 10 gauge is so much easier to deal with.

wordshaper,
@wordshaper@weatherishappening.network avatar

@TechConnectify Absolutely. I went for a larger charger when I got it installed because i had the space on the panel and my supply and it's ridiculous overkill, especially because I need to charge at most once a week.

I wonder, since MS is using a SQLite database for its Recall stuff, whether this tool is vulnerable to any SQL injection attacks. That'd be another layer of hilarity if it was.

wordshaper, to random
@wordshaper@weatherishappening.network avatar

Well, guess the one upside of the giant Microsoft Recall self-own is it’s distracted everyone from Google’s massive AI search result self-own.

wordshaper, to random
@wordshaper@weatherishappening.network avatar

I'm also wondering if Microsoft Recall counts as a means of wiretapping/recording for purposes of those state laws that require consent. If it does, and you're in a state that requires two-party consent for recording, then what? That sounds like it could be all sorts of legal fun.

And by fun I mean "holy shit this is going to be a nightmare" because seriously. Yeah.

wordshaper, to random
@wordshaper@weatherishappening.network avatar

The more I think about this whole Windows Recall thing the more I suspect Microsoft has utterly tanked their sales prospects in business for a decade. This isn’t just a “we have added a feature that you may not like and can turn off” but rather “we have pre-installed a comprehensive keylogger and screen recorder which you can’t remove and is one registry flip away from being enabled”

wordshaper,
@wordshaper@weatherishappening.network avatar

@acdha A lot of people have really, really drunk the AI kool-aid and this is all going to end about as well as you'd expect. Assuming you're a black-hearted cynical pessimist. (so, y'know, this is all pretty much unsurprising for me)

How large Trump PACs are spending money

I analyzed thousands of payments made by 6 large PACs supporting Trump and identified recipients paid over $1 million from 2023 through April 2024

Red Curve Solutions run by PAC treasurer Bradley Crate and Campaign Inbox co-founded by an ex-Cambridge Analytica exec each received $17+ million from Trump PACs

More than half the payments went to other PACs, the RNC, or for legal work

https://newstracs.com/how-the-largest-trump-pacs-are-spending-their-money/2024/06/04/

wordshaper,
@wordshaper@weatherishappening.network avatar

@wendysiegelman I'm curious how the amount of grift here compares to the amount of grift in other campaigns and with other candidates. (All these PACs for all candidates seem in part set up for grift, but I suspect the scale on the Trump side is somewhat larger than normal)
