Probably long overdue, but after my (great) experience at #pyconus I decided to become a PSF member today. If you value something, support it. The default fee is $99 USD, but they recently created a sliding scale to make it more accessible across the world.

Flask-Mail 0.10 released, after a 10 year hiatus! Thanks to @wlach for picking it up at the sprint. This is part of my Pallets-Eco initiative to get old popular extensions maintained again. It's been unarchived and refreshed. I went through and closed out a lot of the issue backlog. We'll have to figure out what a 1.0 release will look like. https://github.com/pallets-eco/flask-mail/releases/tag/0.10.0

@davidism That felt like a good use of time! Thanks again for all the guidance and help (not to mention all the work you did to get this over the line). Great illustration of why events like #pyconus are so valuable to the community.

Hacking on flask-mail (now part of pallets-eco) with really nice folks like @osdotsystem and @davidism. So happy I stayed for the sprints (at least the first day). #PyConUS

Now back home, but still working on this. We're most of the way to being able to do up a bugfix/re-release of the popular flask-mail package which was last updated in 2014 but is nevertheless still quite popular (626,950 downloads last month). So far we've:

  • Added linting using ruff
  • Deprecated support for ancient versions of Python
  • Converted testing to GitHub actions
  • Converted the docs to myst markdown (pending review)
  • Merged a bunch of PRs and responded to various issues.

#PyConUS

I am not sure if I am going to stay contributing past the #pyconus sprint, but the nice part of pallets-eco is that the future of this package will no longer depend on the motivation of a single individual.

Explain to me like I'm 10 years old: Is the Biden tariffs on electric vehicles, batteries, and solar panels coming from China motivated 100% by politics (and maybe racism), or is there some other (more legit) reason to do it?

wlach,
@wlach@mastodon.social avatar

@davidho The charitable interpretation is that it's a desirable end goal to build up a domestic industry to manufacture these things but the Chinese are willing to sell their products to the U.S. at below cost to prevent that. Thus, some combination of tariffs and subsidies are needed to level the playing field.

@webology I also discovered rtx/mise a while ago and liked it for all the reasons you mentioned, but my understanding is that the cool kids are using nix these days. Have it on my to-do list to learn more about it. https://nixos.org/

New video: Is uv the future of Python Packaging?

I’ve set out with a yes/no question to keep it short, but somehow ended up contextualizing Python’s packaging problems and the video ended up 18 mins long.

Enjoy, like, subscribe, etc!

@hynek Yeah this is really good, just shared it internally at my org (where we struggle with a lot of these issues).

FYI it's now official: #Firefox development will soon be moving to a #Git repository, replacing the #Mercurial one that's been in use since 2006

Over the past seven years of maintaining Flask et al, I've had to learn everything from scratch, with little help. I've somehow maintained a life outside of work and open source, despite the unbounded hours. I've put in so much effort to improve the projects, and then put in even more to keep extensions up to date. But there's always something for people to criticize, that I'm not doing well enough, that matters more than acknowledging everything I did do.

wlach,
@wlach@mastodon.social avatar

@davidism This feels like as good an opportunity as any for me to thank you for everything you do. We ❤️ Flask at my employer.

I’m surprised the setup process for every new iPhone still asks whether you want to use FaceID with a mask when 99+% of people aren’t wearing face masks any more. There are lots of features that a small percentage of people use, but they don’t get asked in the device setup process.

wlach,
@wlach@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber Maybe they're looking out for the small minority of people who are still wearing masks due to being immunocompromised or other reasons?

Putting things in perspective…

The swift rise and imminent fall of humanity is nothing more than a blip in the long history of life on earth.

wlach,
@wlach@mastodon.social avatar

@breadandcircuses Yeah, the so-called "anthropocene" is more of an event than era. I think of it as akin to an asteroid striking the earth.

The current phenomenon of large websites "going dark" in response to LLM scraping kind of reminds me of what happened with free-as-in-beer CI systems after people realized they could be co-opted to mine Bitcoin. Silicon valley hype cycles have significant negative externalities.
