og Resident Evil makes game saves a resource and postmodern meta slop like Nier make you delete your save, but no game (afaik) makes deleting saves into a real mechanic. if you have inkrolls to force limited save points, you put these saves into your inventory as a currency, and then spend the saves to buy upgrades or make progress.
imagine burning all of your inkrolls to power up for a boss, then be forced to survive off that one save point for the next few hours of the game.

saves no longer become valuable if the game plays in a linear timeline, so we can fix that with how saving/reloading works. if you keep your inventory when jumping between saves, you get a cool time travel style checkpoint mechanic. go back to an old save to pick up a key you missed, jump back to the present and use it immediately. burning a limited resource and saving means you have to jump back to before that save to branch off not burning that resource.
in this way we can also fix the branching story issue, the player is able to see all outcomes in one playthrough, and even use them to his advantage. the story could require visiting all outcomes for a true ending, since the player's character DID do all the stuff the player did.

this fits in to how i like player-determined difficulty. spending saves is always going to power you up, so you can use all of them to make the game baby easy but only see one ending. spending only a few saves will let you see the true ending + more challenging "optional" fights. you can also spend no saves for a harder challenge, or do certain things out of intended order if you're good enough at the game.
