Very exciting news coming soon - a sort of self-Renaissance...

Simple RNN models that capture neural network criticality / edge of chaos?

I'd like to play around with simple (tutorial-like) recurrent neural network models that capture the phenomenon of criticality. Something like the smallest possible number of recurrently connected model neurons that can recapitulate phenomenon (like information processing peaks for intermediate coupling weights).

Any leads?

vineettiruvadi,

@NicoleCRust why NN here? Why not well characterized NMMs?

Enjoying this book immensely and feel like I'm finally making cohesive progress in CatT foundations.

This should probably be required reading in every #STEM PhD program.

Does democratizing science necessitate public ownership of research infrastructure?

Thinking of eg cloud compute and code.

Build your dream desktop with these Prime Day PC components deals

Make that upgrade (or fresh build) a little less painful with some discounts.

vineettiruvadi,

@arstechnica why are you advertising for Amazon under the guise of an article?

Was kind of hoping this kind of garbage would be unwelcome on Mastodon.

6 thought provoking questions posed to @awaisaftab (psychiatrist) and myself (brain researcher) and we hit on so much:

The challenge of escaping reductionism. Theories of consciousness. Are mental disorders brain disorders? Why should anyone care about philosophy? Is epistemic iteration is failing? And what bits of brain research are awaiting their Copernican moment?

With nods to @summerfieldlab, @knutson_brain, @tyrell_turing, @Neurograce, @eikofried and so many more.

Read it all here (and let's discuss)!

https://awaisaftab.substack.com/p/advancing-neuroscientific-understanding

vineettiruvadi,

@NicoleCRust @awaisaftab Interesting! Looking forward to diving in more detail.

Unless I missed it, there isn't an explicit definition of reductionism? @awaisaftab introduces the concept with an example (eg neurotransmitter/region focus) but not a definition.

Curious how both of you define it, and whether you synced up on the definition "off camera" before the discussion?

Reading through recent work from Haspel et al. @kordinglab (https://arxiv.org/abs/2308.06578).

Overall I'm excited that these types of visions are coming into #neuroscience - but I see a major flaw in how they define "reverse-engineering" and #engineering more broadly.

So I wrote a bit about it - Part 1 of my reaction to efforts to "reverse-engineer" in neuroscience.

https://virati.medium.com/a-quick-comment-on-reverse-engineering-b03284787b33

tl;dr system identification is not reverse-engineering.

Is there a way to study neuromodulation, particularly invasive neuromodulation, outside of institutional confines? Outside of huge capital raises? Something anchored in community, in accessibility and egalitarianism?

What do you think?

Loving the energy here on Mastodon - and it seems to keep improving day-by-day.

Importantly - I know that the community being built here is robust to caprice. Makes it feel way more home-y than other options.

POLL: Are you on board with mind/brain reductionism (to genetic expression)?

In 1998, Eric Kandel proposed a new intellectual framework for psychiatry in which brain function and dysfunction can ultimately be reduced to genetic expression but one in which environmental effects (including psychotherapy) play a role (by modulating genetic expression which changes neural circuits and neuron function).

Paper here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9545989/

Summarized here: https://neuromatch.social/@NicoleCRust/110819846084871415

If you're not on board, why not?

vineettiruvadi,

@NicoleCRust strange to me that anyone says yes today.

Dynamical systems alone give a much better framework via landscape (genes) and actuations (environment/self).

The idea that everything gets funneled through genes seems empirically, unequivocally, unanimously incorrect.

Just discovered ML Collective and it looks great! https://mlcollective.org/

Anyone have any experiences or thoughts with them?

vineettiruvadi, to random

I suspect a lot of progress ascribed to rigor actually arises from serendipity and, heaven forbid, intuition.

If so, we should be doing everything we can to increase serendipity in science, not rigidity.

Let the machines handle the rigid parts.

Agree? Disagree?

Question for :
Getting tired of my version that relies on different versions of Python modules than the ones I need for coding…

What is your favourite for Python (and why?)?

vineettiruvadi,

@elduvelle (sadly) vscode is incredible.

There's an opensourced version of it that lags the MS official one just a bit when it comes to features - worth it.

vineettiruvadi, to random

How does the brain control emotion? Does that question even make sense?
