I'm afraid no one will get what they want from all that "AI" craze.

Techbros will not get an AI-filled world they want.

But anti-AI folks like me will also not get back a world without AI they want.

It will not prosper, but it will not fail miserably like "metaverse" did - It will become yet another mundane thing that sometimes get technically better, and usually becomes more evil in the process, but no one will bat an eye because of how mundane it is.

I think it may as well become "autotune" of writers and programmers (not for artists, IMHO), a thing that everyone will be ashamed to admit they are using because it means they are "not the real deal", but most will still use.

It doesn't mean we cannot change anything, but the change to the world at large won't be as drastic as we expect.

@untsuki@udongein.xyz avatar

@drq

My take is that we probably don't even need to make AGI except maybe for the scientific interest? "AI" is already a mixed bag in terms of how much money goes into making it compared to how much real world problems it solves (for example, it does basically nothing to progress solving global issues with environment, society, wars, etc. but takes resources and attention away from them), and creation of AGI will raise the additional moral debate whether we should treat is as a conscious being, and add additional unpredictability to an already largely imprecise system.

For reference, this name is heavily used in russia (especially in videogame community, but real world event disscussions are also using that name) and it's a first time I see it called a slur. The more generic term "Ignitable substance" is only used for scientific or official style of speech.

Currently, paid source-availible aseprite is way more featureful than libresprite.

But libresprite is still a good simple editor, and a better way of legally getting "free aseprite" than building from source or finding old builds.

P.S. Proprietary relicensing is a bad taste, but I think it's not THAT bad when source is still available and software stays a fair indie thing with one-time buying and not turning into ad/spyware. I personally build aseprite from source myself since nixos allows automating it and I find it useful enough it to sacrifice time and cpu usage during updates.

Dear manga/manhwa/manhua/webcomic/novel writers,

When I come to read whatever you made when it's named "reincarnated as villain(ess)", I expect your "villain(ess)" to be an epic powerful being, an edgy teen, a confident and calculative elegant lady, or something in-between.

I do not expect, want or deserve that character being just a generic school bully, an asshole rapist, and a stupid idiot in one package, at least without that personality being changed in process of reincarnation.

At the very least, do not frame being manipulative, abusive and stupid at the same time as a reasonable thing to do at any level.

Not yours not truly,
Random reader that will probably never reach out to you.

I think at this point it's worth thinking about why we need text chats and voice/video calls integrated with each other like what (try to), , and do

Why not just go back to or something like for text, and something like for calls like the old days :sagume_think:

@lispi314 @mima

I'm pretty sure that person hates it being a proprietary shit too. The point is, you are forced to use it if you need to talk to someone who you cannot to use subpar foss alternatives.

The other issue is we don't have basically anything decent (and not proprietart) to fallback to for separating them, since:

For text IRC is too barebones, XMPP has it's own problems, Matrix is unreliable, and Delta chat is hacky.

For voice we have Mumble, but it requires hosting it since it is mot designed for using it for public server but having private spaces in it.

untsuki,
@untsuki@udongein.xyz avatar

@lispi314 @mima As far as I know, Mumble doesn't support any e2e encryption for so you need to really trust server admin, where point of XMPP/Matrix likes is that you either can selfhost yourself only, or not self host at all and still get some level of privacy via encryption.

Still, yeah, it may be okay if you can set it up for your friend group. For text, I am not sure what I can use even for people I can put through spme inconviniences.

Writing from NixOS 23.11 "Tapir" :nixowos:

Update was mostly smooth, needed to change some options and wait for some things to build.

What I currently discovered:

Broken:

  • Intel opengl driver override (snippet that I borrowed from nixlang wiki), for some reason it tries loading both one built from source with build overrides, and some other one, and causes collision.

Fixed:

  • Obsidian, Blockbench and a bunch of other packages updated to new versions that don't need vulnerable electron version.
  • Doesn't need loading hid-nintendo kernel module separately anymore.
  • Some more smaller goodies and updates from unstable.

Caveats:

  • It seems not everything is built on Hydra yet, it built nx-evo engine from source despite not having any overrides.
  • It deprecated native hosts build overrides for firefox and librewolf, while only firefox has new options that replace it.
  • Throws a bunch of warnings that are related to home-manager (or something else) not updating offline documentation and use deprecated option

Summary - It was quite okay, every error and warning it threw at me was useful enough identify problem and fix most if them, nothing meaningful broke for me.

If compared to my Fedora experience, NixOS needed more tweaking to change deprecated options, but unlike Fedora I didn't have to uninstall anything from outside repositories. If I didn't use overrides and custom packages, my problems would be cut in half, though.

@sandro

Native messaging hosts are a thing to connect some native software to browser addon, basically, I use it for better integration of Firefox with KDE Plasma (Native download notifications, bookmarks, history and tabs search from krunner). Adding them to derivations in NixOS is done on wrapper level, and they were moved to options from wrapper build option overrides, but firefox forks like librewolf do not have separate options and cannot build if trying to set it as package for firefox options.

I use correct branch of HM and it just seems that they didn't yet update everything they planned since issue about that warnings is still open.

Intel drivers do work in a setup similar to yours, but not when I override vaapi package with option I copied from wiki, but I am not sure if this option even matters on my device, so I will leave it at that for now.

Written an issue to minetest github repo for feature request about system Text To Speech integration that would be available for mods, but I'm pretty much sure it would lead to nothing, since I am too stupid to add anything like that myself, and actual devs are doing something completely unrelated currently

untsuki,
@untsuki@udongein.xyz avatar

@pax It's an open source video game engine or platform similar to minecraft in style.

As for now, there is no screen reader support or general text to speech in it, and developers do not seem to care about accessibility as for now, so I was trying to propose a feature that could make it possible to at least emulate a behavior of a screen reader in games made for this platform.

When I first started using FOSS software I was like "It's very cool, but I guess it's not popular because it needs advertisement it does not get with actual ads!"

But recently, I came to realisation, that there is a lot of people advocating for free software, it's just their words do not get response until usability, acessibility, lack of features and a bunch of other problems are fixed.

Advertising FOSS and educating people is also necessarry, but it will not be enough to make a difference.
