Tada! New website landed today - onward to Fedora 40!

tunix,

@jorge Very well done and beautiful!

Linux vim, emacs, neovim and/or tmux users, what terminal emulator do you use and why? I heard about kitty, but idk if I really need all of that. For context, on mac I use neovim with iterm.
#linux #vim #neovim #emacs #tmux #debian

tunix,

@edfattell I've been a long time user of alacritty and tmux but switched over to wezterm + zellij - couldn't be happier.

Nowadays, I want to test ptyxis (previously known as Prompt).

I was trying to install an Elasticsearch cluster on some servers. I created a config file that's relatively short, without any comments or unnecessary settings. It includes my changes only.

I created an enrollment token on the primary server and went ahead to join other nodes into the cluster but the command fails, claiming that my ES config lacks some auto configuration settings.

Turned out that my ES config lacks COMMENTS!! 🀦 I added the comments and it worked!

Whoah.. It's been a while but I just found about the acquisition of VMWare by Broadcom. I didn't even know Broadcom had an interest in virtualization space.

Hey @89luca89, I'm not sure if this deserves creating an issue on your side. I use distrobox as my main toolchain and call 1Password's op via distrobox-host-exec. Unlike executing on host, op says "Allow Unknown Application to get CLI access" while on host, it says "Allow flatpak-session-helper to get CLI access" (used inside wezterm flatpak). Do you have any idea what may cause this? Do you think I should create an issue?

Hey @wimpy Are you happy with your Thinkpad Z13 Gen1? Do you still have that amazing battery life? Have you tried clamshell mode? My wifi connection slows down almost 50% when in clamshell mode. How is yours?

I'm really a bit disappointed about System76's approach to any other distro than Pop!_OS -- I started with it, loved it but quickly started to experience it's limits, bugs etc. I decided that I no longer wanted Ubuntu on desktop and moved over to Fedora Silverblue. I found a repo that tries to make System76's driver and firmware work on Fedora but things are going south lately.

tunix,

@aeftaw afaik, they have at least 2 drivers. 1 is for ACPI, the other is for IO. They also have some software such as the scheduler, firmware-daemon etc. They don't package these stuff for any other distro. Basically they don't have any support for any other distro than Pop!_OS.

Also it's really unfortunate to see that System76 firmware app doesn't seem to work anymore on Fedora Silverblue. When I open the app, it says that it should be opened with a more privileged user (which is me?) and when I do, I just see an empty app.

I wasn't really aware that System76 is a bit out of touch with the rest of the ecosystem where Dell, Lenovo, StarLabs, Tuxedo, Framework users have way more easier access to firmware.

tunix,

@cassidy I never heard that. Are there any public announcements? Last time I read about it, they were talking against it, speculating about its incapabilities etc. Unfortunately I never had the pleasure to use GNOME Software for firmware updates. It's still the case.

tunix,

@cassidy cool. When I search for System76, LVFS, fwupd, I only see the debate in 2018 which corrolates with what I wrote.

tunix,

@cassidy I'm still able to use their acpi driver on Fedora Silverblue but not sure if their firmware-daemon works anymore. I just feel a little left out since I migrated away from Pop!_OS

tunix,

@cassidy When I decided to go with a Lemur Pro (I bought it the hard way btw - https://alperkan.at/2021/05/system76-lemur-pro/#how-did-i-buy-it) one of the reasons was about firmware updates :) Now I can't be sure whether I missed them or not since I don't trust the experience on Fedora Silverblue.

tunix, to random

I just found out that the download speed of my Lemur Pro (lemp10) with Fedora Silverblue goes down to 1-8 Mbps from 24 Mbps when I close the lid and work in clamshell mode. I don't think this was the case before but I really can't tell when this started. Upload speed doesn't seem to be affected so I really think there is a bug or something.

Now that I cannot pull my container toolbox, I'm not able to edit things as I've used to nor I have access to the tools I've been using. I'm able to pull other's images though.

tunix, to GNOME

GNOME randomly beeps like an old school Casio watch and I couldn't figure out how to disable it. Tried disabling Evolution notifications but that didn't do it. Any ideas? #gnome #fedora

tunix,

@arch_angel I kind of like the voice feedback GNOME has for increasing/lowering sound. πŸ˜ƒ That may be the only blocker for this workaround.

tunix,

@jibsaramnim Yes. I just tried this command and hoping for the beep not going off. πŸ˜„

tunix,

@jibsaramnim Will do, thanks

Part of the reason I make my bluefin-framework image because it's been over two years since that one youtuber broke his linux install, and despite all that, we're still waiting for basic reliability.

Linux laptop vendors have done ... absolutely nothing to fix the problem.

Framework gives me the hardware, and a blank canvas, so we'll figure it out on our own.

#linux

tunix,

@jorge How does Framework work for you btw? I was kind of disappointed that you had to switch to TLP instead of power-profiles-daemon for a decent battery life. It's like a rollback of a GNOME feature.

tunix,

@jorge I've been waiting for an ARM based Linux laptop that can perform comparable to how Macs with M1..2 perform. In our dreams, perhaps? πŸ˜„

No matter what I did, I couldn't get my container image to be pulled by podman (and therefore by distrobox) cosign seems to sign it just fine. I've compared my repo with boxkit of @jorge , no differences. Yet, I couldn't make it work. 😫

https://github.com/tunix/toolboxes/blob/main/.github/workflows/build.yml

Error: Source image rejected: cryptographic signature verification failed: invalid signature when validating ASN.1 encoded signature

tunix,

@jorge Weird. None of them works for me at the moment. Gonna restart and try. Maybe some bad update on my local?

tunix,

@jorge I restarted, got latest updates but still doesn't work. That error also reveals nothing on Google. 😩

tunix,

@jorge Well well, it looks like podman keeps some data in /etc/containers which is unexpected to me since the containers I use are my user data. But it keeps some repository related data for some reason. Clearing it solved the problem.
