Dutch was an abandoned cat who started hanging out on a neighbor's porch during the summer of 2019. He had extensive hair loss on his neck, so a Metro Cat Rescue volunteer brought him inside. Thankfully -- as the patches didn't glow under a black light -- the condition wasn't ringworm. Dutch was treated for fleas and mites.

trueinfections,

During October of 2020, Dutch had blood in his urine. The vet determined through a number of tests that the condition was a urinary infection, not a blockage. After many days of medication, Dutch recovered from that, but still was very weak. It took a long time for him to regain health completely.

Questions that I've not seen investigated are:

  • To what degree are feral / peridomestic cats now a reservoir?
  • To what degree do cats catch SARS CoV 2 from rodent prey?
  • Do coinfections of FECV and SARS CoV 2 in cats ever results in recombination?

One can imagine the virus developing in rodents and deer and then from rodents to cats.

trueinfections,

Mink farms are complexes of caged mink, escaped mink, wild mink, peridomestic cats and feral cats. Presumably the virus could be developing in the caged mink and then spread to those outside. The virus also could be developing in rodents / deer and then from there to the free mink, peridomestic and feral cats and from there to the caged mink. Once in the caged mink, a variant can then spread to people. #SarsCoV2 #COVID19 #zoonosis

trueinfections,

Tangentially, Russia and China have large fur farms. Is there a single report of SARS CoV 2 at any of these?

Charlie was born outside 3 years ago. One day he disappeared. A Metro Cat Rescue volunteer searched and found him—very sick. Charlie would have died, but he got to the vet just in time.

Charlie sleeps in my bed. During the night, he often wakes up and hugs me. I think Charlie has nightmares of when he was cold and sick outside.

Metro Cat Rescue continues to care for Charlie and many others saved from the streets.

@Gargron I don't see Privacy and Reach. Am I missing something because the coffee hasn't kicked in yet? @happykhan

A hospital stay was a death sentence for a local centenarian. I'm told that a 100 year old woman who lived a few doors down from Jersey City Free Books suffered a fall at home. This mishap was serious enough to require hospitalization. There, she was infected with SARS CoV 2 and quickly died.

trueinfections,

Over the years I've heard stories of the seemingly healthy elderly elderly becoming bedridden from a relatively minor incident. Then, they quickly descended in a tailspin of illness and often died. Presumably, this is looming comorbidity for #CoViD19 .

For there to be a risk/benefit analysis concerning infection prevention in, say, a supermarket or a train station is now to be expected. I'd think that making certain that a hospital didn't pose a health risk should be priority number one.

trueinfections,

A related discussion is health care facilities as threats to public health. I recall a study of ATMs near hospitals as possible shared hearths, for here the spread of disease instead of culture. I am always shocked to see doctors or nurses in their work clothes on public transportation.

trueinfections,

Health care personnel wearing scrubs on their morning commute carry the current Top 40 disease causing organisms playing on public transportation in to the hospital. Wearing the same back home gives the general populace a chance of being exposed to suitcase pathogens and uber-mutated microorganisms having gained virulence and/or transmissibility in the health care setting a la mode Paul Ewald.

trueinfections,

Health care workers should shower and change into uniforms upon arriving at the hospital. End of shift, they should again shower and put their street clothes back on. The garments worn while working should be laundered at the facility.

trueinfections,

It's understandable that health care workers are proud of their service and want to signal it. Perhaps the institutions could issue jackets with "colors" like those worn by motorcycle clubs. On top could be the city. The main logo would represent the specific hospital. Patches would designate schools, degrees and specialties.

Official garb would also facilitate responding to an emergency.

Jemma was at the vet early Friday morning for a dental procedure. An infected tooth must be very painful and is endangering her overall health. The total cost came to around $2000.

trueinfections,

A Metro Cat Rescue volunteer saved Jemma in 2016. A mom living outside, she had given birth in a car about to be towed to the junkyard. Metro Cat Rescue took in the whole little family and continues to care for them.
