sugar_in_your_tea,

Huh, I just lost a lot of respect for IKEA…

sugar_in_your_tea, (edited )

We actually buy a lot from them and they’re reasonably durable. We’ve had a lot of their stuff for the ~10 years we’ve lived in this house. Some of their stuff is utter trash, and some is overpriced, but we’ve been happy with most of what we got.

We don’t go there for everything, but we do buy a fair amount. I have kids and they love “building” things from IKEA. I’ll probably end up building my own furniture at some point (I have the tools, but not the time), and it’ll probably be based on IKEA styles.

An important thing to note is that they don’t move well, so if you’re moving between apartments, expect stuff to break. We have some “nicer” furniture from a local furniture store, and they seem more sturdy for that kind of thing, but we don’t like the style as much and it costs way more.

sugar_in_your_tea,

Furniture that needs to be bolted to the walls

I never bolt mine to my walls, and it’s fine.

Ikea ‘wood’

Yeah, I’m not a fan of their particle board or whatever, but they seem to have designed around it well given that my furniture has held up well. It’s cheaper than the furniture store stuff, and I hate the sales tactics they use at the local furniture stores, so it’s a win-win for me.

We’ll probably get some “nice” furniture once my kids are done dumping soda and whatnot all over our stuff, but my IKEA stuff has held up way better than I expected.

sugar_in_your_tea,

Ideally, enough mutes/blocks and that person would get a manual review.

I don’t like automated bans because they often have false positives.

sugar_in_your_tea,

Probably the negative press from their warranty process sucking. Check out the Gamers Nexus video about it, and I’m sure there are plenty of other sources as well.

sugar_in_your_tea,

In most cases I’ve seen AI used, the person spends as much time correcting it than they would if they just did the work without AI. So maybe it makes you feel more productive because a bunch of stuff happens all at once, but at least for text generation, I think it’s more of a placebo.

sugar_in_your_tea,

Why not just use lorem ipsum? It’s just a copy/paste, and without the liability of having false information if you forget to proofread it.

Exactly. I live in Utah, which is perfect for nuclear:

  • desert close by with a mountain between the desert and dense population
  • lots of coal power, and unique air quality concerns due to inversion
  • perfectly set up for mass transit - about half (more than half?) of the population lives in a narrow corridor, so cars could be replaced with electric trains and buses
  • no access to the ocean, geothermal is probably expensive due to hard rock, no tides, hydro couldn’t be done at scale, cold winters make battery storage hard, etc

So why don’t we do it? FUD. We should have a nuclear base with solar and wind helping out, but instead we have a coal base and are transitioning to natural gas. That’s dumb. And it’s hilarious because we sell electricity to California when their backbone isn’t sufficient.

It’s probably not the best option everywhere, but it’s a really good option in many areas.

sugar_in_your_tea,

And cost isn’t really an issue for militaries, while it absolutely is for civilians.

sugar_in_your_tea,

Yup, the military’s purpose is to not be needed. It should be strong enough to deter attack and assist diplomacy (carrot and stick), and no larger. Our (US) military is bigger than that, so it gets used in place of diplomacy.

sugar_in_your_tea,

Then don’t use ASUS, pick a brand that’s supported.

sugar_in_your_tea,

Yup, that’s what I use. Mikrotik router and Ubiquiti AP. Ubiquiti APs are kind of a pain, but they work well once configured, and I honestly haven’t had many problems with Mikrotik.

The nice thing about this setup is I can replace one thing without replacing the rest. If I want to upgrade to 10 gigabit ethernet, I don’t need to mess with the wifi, I just need to upgrade the router. Or if the wifi isn’t strong enough, I can just get another AP. If I want to do something fancy, I can probably do it with the software on the router.

sugar_in_your_tea,

Exactly. If you have Streamboat Willie murdering some other character or something, that’s totally fine because the average consumer won’t think it came from Disney.

Here’s my opinion on IP law:

  • trademark - should continue existing as it is today, though perhaps relax the “must protect trademark” rule to limit pointless lawsuits
  • patents - limit duration to 5-7 years, perhaps with a one-time renewal if you need more time to hit the market; patents must be owned by individuals, not companies and cannot be sold; patent lawsuits would have stiff penalties if the suit is deemed frivolous
  • copyright - revert to original duration: 14 years, renewable once

I’m totally fine with trademark continuing as it is today.

sugar_in_your_tea,

Yup, agreed. I like both Ron Paul and Chase Oliver, and I’m somewhere in the middle between them. Maybe I just like people with two first names ;)

But yeah, I’ll probably pick up some merch. I rarely openly support politicians, but we need libeetarianism to get more recognition. Apparently both Trump and Biden have pulled out of the debate commission, so there’s a better chance than ever for third parties to debate the major parties.

Yeah, Oliver has his faults, but I don’t see anyone better stepping up.

sugar_in_your_tea,

If they want to entice me, they need to:

  • open their platform
  • release interesting form factors
  • provide interesting, unique features

The Steam Deck did that, and I would happily buy a Sony handheld or something if it offered value.

But no, they instead want me to buy a locked down system that competes with my existing PC, and their sales pitch is, “buy this or you can’t play these games.” I don’t respond well to threats of FOMO, so I’m not going to buy it. I own a Switch and a Steam Deck because they provide value I can’t get elsewhere, I don’t own a Playstation or an Xbox because they don’t.

sugar_in_your_tea,

Good thing I don’t play multiplayer games very often.

sugar_in_your_tea,

If it helps, I mostly got it so I could play fun couch co-op games w/ my kids. We’ve taken it camping, on road trips, etc, and it’s honestly quite good for that.

sugar_in_your_tea,

I wrote both things.

Yes, Nintendo is anti-consumer and way worse in that regard, but they really deliver on the “new ways to play” angle. I just can’t get anything like the local multiplayer experience I get with Nintendo elsewhere, and that’s true for almost all of their history:

  • NES - awesome accessories, like the DuckHunt gun, running pad, etc
  • N64 - local multiplayer games were fantastic, and the controller was interesting
  • Wii - controller made for a very fun casual multiplayer experience
  • Switch - very portable and the joycons are very easy to pass around

And their handhelds were all the best on the market:

  • gameboy - first and had fantastic battery life, the gameboy color was immensely popular; no competition whatsoever
  • gba - way better gameplay experience vs gameboy, Sega Game Gear had terrible battery life, huge back catalogue with gb compat, so upgrading was a no-brainer
  • Nintendo DS - PSP had better hardware, DS had better battery life, better load times, and just better portability all around; 3DS improved on this

Nintendo has continually delivered an interesting gaming experience with almost each generation. That’s why they appeal to people despite the anti-consumer behavior they have, and that’s why I buy their systems.

Valve gets most of my gaming money because they win the rest of my priorities, but Nintendo gets some too. PS5 and Xbox compete in all the ways I don’t care about, Nintendo and Steam compete in the ways I do.

sugar_in_your_tea,

But it can’t. Can you remove the controllers and play with a friend? Can you slip it in a bag, just in case? Can you play on an airplane or road trip without worrying about battery life?

The Steam Deck is fantastic for single player gaming, which is why I have it. But battery life isn’t great for portability (road trips or flights), and for multiplayer, you basically need to hook it up to a TV and have more controllers.

I don’t see much point in a Switch Lite except to reuse games from another Switch you have.

sugar_in_your_tea, (edited )

Why make teams?

I play Switch games on Switch, and PC games on Steam Deck. Switch, for me, is casual gaming with my kids or friends. PC, for me, is more intense gaming alone or with friends online.

Can you play something like Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, or Mario Party with someone on an airplane or in a car with a PC? If you’re playing games with friends visiting, can you easily hand off a controller every round and expect the next player to have fun?

Couch co-op kinda sucks on PC generally. Xbox was cool with the Kinect, but they killed that so I’m back to Nintendo. Nintendo just offers a fantastic casual gaming experience.

I have Switch because it’s a lot of fun with my wife and kids. I have Steam Deck because I like playing games in bed. I have a gaming PC for more intense games. I don’t have Xbox or PS because they aren’t better in any way imo.

sugar_in_your_tea,

Yeah, I bought it because it was an interesting form factor, not too expensive, and I could repurpose it if I ended up not liking the Steam experience. I honestly play 99% Steam games, so I’m liking it a lot.

I don’t buy most consoles (except Switch) because they’re not interesting form factors, games are generally a lot more expensive, and it’ll just become ewaste.

If Sony made a good, standalone handheld, I might get it. If Microsoft continued the Kinect, I might get an Xbox (I had the 360 for Kinect in the past). But no, neither is compelling, so I don’t buy them.

sugar_in_your_tea,

I think I actually agree with this. I’m libertarian and generally believe fewer restrictions are better, but schools should be able to restrict what kids have available to them during class. Kids should be able to bring them to school, but they should be put away while class is in session.

If parents disagree with that policy, they can enroll their kids somewhere else. But schools should absolutely have authority over what’s allowed on school property.
