I saw someone posting about what their main operating system(s) are and I thought I'd throw my hat in the ring.

Windows 11 is my daily driver, but I use Ubuntu daily remotely. I'm comfortable enough now with Linux that I'd like to make it my main OS on my laptop but I can't bring myself to not be able to use certain programs, or play Final Fantasy XIV (which I'm sure runs fine in WINE but I've not checked and honestly, I've never been able to figure WINE out).

I forgot how tech oriented and how helpful Mastodon can be! It's helping me knock off a bunch of stuff off of my to do list.

So to that end, is anyone able to help me with procuring this video from the NHK archive website?

I've been told that there is footage in this special of Fujitsu's offices in San Jose circa 1996 during the development of WorldsAway (The sequel to Lucasfilm's Habitat). Key staff were interviewed for it. I can't access it without a VPN.

@vga256 LOL I was going to say, seeing the fighter pilot in the beginning with 90's CGI style graphics did make me think it was to be honest.

Specifically, it's this show and it's 49 minutes long I believe:
https://www.nhk.or.jp/archives/chronicle/detail/?crnid=A199611082130001300100

If you are able to grab that, I'd love to have a copy of it (and it'd be great on the IA too!)

stublad,
@stublad@mastodon.social avatar

@vga256 ahhhh I knew it was too good to be true that it'd be on the site. I know someone with a copy on VHS who was sent it by the producers of the show because they were interviewed for it, but they've gone silent :(

stublad,
@stublad@mastodon.social avatar

@vga256 I had no idea. For some reason, I figured they would've had all their stuff digitised, catalogued and available online somewhere somehow.

I'll keep trying that person in that case because it's even more important now to find a copy of this thing.

Cheers for trying.

To celebrate the release of the Lucasfilm's Habitat beta footage coming soon, here's some screenshots of stuff that haven't been seen for 36 years.

These were on the end of the tape containing in-game newspapers and weren't part of the original transfer.

Here you see QLink explaining that they were closing Habitat down and thanking everyone. New info here is that they claimed it'd only be closed for a month. It was a year!

The Habitat tapes have been transferred and currently sit at about 56gb each for both 2 hours tapes. I'll be uploading the raw files + encodes to the Internet Archive soon.

To cover the cost of shipping from the taper and back though, I need $20. I wouldn't normally ask but things are tight right now.

If anyone can help with that, here is my PayPal link. I'll be deleting this post as soon as it's covered.

We're opening up the Club Caribe restoration project to everyone and we need your help!

It's been 30 years since the service shut down, but we have images + footage of almost 300 unique rooms or regions that can be rebuilt in the browser using a simple tool @SpindleyQ
created.

It's never been more viable to rebuild this pioneering world than today.

Come and join us. More info in the blog post.

Connecting the hatchery where new avatars arrived in Club Caribe up to the rest of the world is going great! Almost at the point of being able to connect up these new areas to the areas I recreated 6 years ago and then we will have ourselves a party.

Here’s how the new Avatar region flow looks currently

The Club Caribe restoration project is starting to get back up and running after a 6 year break, thanks to some excellent tooling from @SpindleyQ .

Here we see the Library entrance, where new users to the service would end up after creating a new avatar and exiting a region offering help.

After 30 years, reviving Club Caribe in some way is actually a possibility.

Can any Sun hardware aficionados help me to identify the models of workstation in this picture?

I believe they are likely the same model but I am most interested in knowing what the top machine is.

I don’t have these machines in my possession to be able to check for any other info or take new photos sadly.

It's the 30th anniversary of Quantum Link and Lucasfilm Games virtual world, Club Caribe, closing down on February 20th, 1994.

I wrote a blog post about it and to share info about a project to recreate the service is going.

Check it out!

I posted about the EC Habitats hack day when it was announced but I wrote an article about it to provide context to what it actually is and how it helped inspire modern programming concepts like webapps and promises/futures.

Found new footage of Lucasfilm's Habitat after 35 years. Someone recorded a play session at the close of the beta test and it's only been unearthed today.

Working to preserve it in a higher quality but here's some screenshots for now.

@vga256 they’re super watchable but the quality could definitely be better with a fresh transfer. It was recorded in extended play mode so it wasn’t the best quality to begin with, but it was last transferred on a crappy consumer VHS deck and early 2000’s graphics card in an older format. I’m hopeful we can clean it up nicely.

[C64] Hey Mastodon people.

I'm working on upgrading the version of the C64 VICE emulator we use in the NeoHabitat client (http://neohabitat.org).

We use v3.1 and the latest is v3.7. The way ini files are handled changed between them and I've been copying over the settings so our client works out of the box.

For some reason, I cannot get the keybind for right ctrl to be fire and tab to be ctrl when using the numkey joystick setup.

Does anyone have any idea why this might be? Thanks :)

I run a site documenting the history of some of the first graphical virtual worlds and I have a post I’d like to share from my bird site account I have for it.

Does anyone have a copy of the book "Rogue Leaders: The Story of LucasArts" ? We're looking for a scan of the Lucasfilm Habitat art that's featured on page 39.

If anyone has contact info for Ken Macklin who originally painted that art, please get in touch.
