I'm back from a fun few days at #emf2024 - great vibe, ran into old friends, made new ones, and learned some random stuff (like the previous retoot about timezones on the London underground) .

Most of (all?) the hacks were funny and had a physical manifestation - not purely software. Also quite a retro feel to a lot of it - Fax machines etc but also robots/droids everywhere!

Phase 3 of my mad #crossborderrail has begun - sleeper from Naples to Milan.
It is cheaper than a room for the night in Naples and lets me get a head start on tomorrow's trip to the UK. The only bad part is the blueish lighting which makes it look like a morgue.

I had a pleasant couple of hours in Bolzano - Italian cooking and German beer is a great combination! Then caught the sleeper train to Rome, which is exactly as I remember it from 50 years ago, except with 90's power sockets. Slept ok-ish and now awake to see the dawn over Rome. #CrossBorderRail

It is astonishing how productive I can be on an ICE train.

Yesterday's trip back from Krakow via Warsaw was painless - I got some work done, read some more of my book, bought/listened to a new album (Tyla as reviewed in @thecontinent ).

The ride did make me appreciate the sheer comfort of the German ICE trains though. The Polish #CrossBorderRail rollingstock is a bit antique - no wifi and not the best seats, clean and punctual though, so I can't really complain.

A small #CrossBorderRail linguistic observation - I was initially confused by the Polish signage for both 'platform' and 'track' numbers.
Most platforms have 2 tracks !

The British don't distinguish between the two, the Dutch consistently use 'spoor' which is a track - but never talk about platforms.

What can I expect in Italy / Switzerland next week?

(I'm trying to recall what the French do)

I'm somewhat hesitant to follow the advice
"run xz -V to check your system"
I mean

a) If the box is compromised you probably shouldn't ssh into it - so best do this from the console only ?
b) Is it really good practice to run a binary you think may be compromised ?

Or am I being paranoid ?

I'm very proud of what we did there, even if it didn't fit the commercial podcast model.

Have a listen to literally any episode and I promise you will learn something - every one contained an 'aah haa' moment for me.

I'm delighted to find another 'usefully wrong' person.

I have a small cadre of people I follow whose opinions are always wrong.

Any issue I'm not sure about I wait for one of these 4 or 5 folks to chime in on it and that helps me clarify my thinking on a tricky topic.
