scratchandgame,

It’s a normal thing and there’s no need for you to brag. You are expected to delete every account you do not use.

scratchandgame,

A garbage to run ads again. Everyone already knows the myths and they don’t need the same post to pop up every year.

scratchandgame, (edited )

Every year I upgrade to something better and found the past distros very disgusting.

6/2021: Ubuntu, Debian, Mint (for ~15 minutes), Kali Linux

2022: Ubuntu, Lubuntu, RHEL, Fedora (for some days), Arch

2023: Artix (for some days), Gentoo, Alpine (Alpine is the best distro I’ve ever seen), switched to OpenBSD in the end of the year!

2024: OpenBSD. Have a machine running FreeBSD but currently unplugged and haven’t learned anything from FreeBSD.

OpenBSD is so simple and I started reading man pages when I use it. I’m starting to learn tmux. Started to learn sed. Started writing some shell scripts. I can confirm I wasted time using all the distros above except Alpine. Except when I compile the linux kernel on Gentoo. I switched to OpenBSD without any problem. I quickly forgot the /dev/sda1 and learned disklabel. Not using vim without any problem, and I learned how to use vi efficiently.

OpenBSD is not too hard for any “newbies” that can read English. They can type “help” and it will open help(1). When they have read help(1) they will read afterboot(8). afterboot(8) is just comprehensive. It’s a pity that package management is about the end of this man page, but package management is just simple: pkg_add and pkg_delete package-name. They may read pkg_add(1) and pkg_delete(1) when they want to upgrade.

Default X11 window manager is fvwm. xterm is launched when X is started. You can move windows with mouse. Minimized windows also appear on the grey screen. But you have to double click much. This is usable. cwm is also available when you want a wm that can be used with a keyboard. It is much more efficient.

2025: plan 9 ???

I really hope microsoft abandons windows in favour of its cloud apps for people who need it and lets Linux distros rule the desktop world

This only born more commercial distros and make macos and chromeos span even more.

Open source benefits when there are so many companies competing.

My friend didn't have a great experience with Linux

I have been daily driving Linux for over two years now and I have switched distros many times. So, when my friend bought a new laptop, I convinced him to install Linux Mint on it. I asked him if he wanted to dual boot, he said no because it would fill up all his storage. We installed Linux Mint. The other day, he wanted to play...

scratchandgame, (edited )

So why you convinced anyone to install a linux distro in the first place. But not asking him about whatever thing he will need later. Just install Windows.

(His SSD might be slightly damaged (by some unnecessary writings) because of you.) temporary removed without due date

You cannot kill windows and any other proprietary operating system by just switching their users to any currently “free” (as in no price to use and restrictive in modifications) linux distros. Don’t try it again. Take off the tenses.

scratchandgame,

Because I am trying to dissuade those fanatics who consider themselves great and genuine revolutionaries. While their operating systems are totally identical to windows and aren’t free (gpl everywhere haha). You guys are even worse than fsf and richard stallman.

scratchandgame,

I thought writing unnecessary thing would always “damage” any drive :)? Especially wiping.

scratchandgame,

This is the first time I saw you saying something correct.

scratchandgame,

(OP can ignore this comment)

I’m a bit upset that GrapheneOS does not follow OpenBSD: ignore any person hating it, ignore anyone who wants to interferes with project personnel and donations like usa is doing on Viet Nam like they are speaking for the Vietnamese, and don’t care if the feature works “for you” or not, just going on code improvements & maximally free code. And do whatever Micay want to do. Accept donations from whatever company. There’s so much dramas. But they already achieved over-detailed documentations. Focusing on unprivileged google play is the true path, since the demand on google play is much larger and other “private” apps repos are expected to work on the “privacy” people’s phone.

Maybe because GrapheneOS haven’t made any world-significant project that every companies depend on so that companies have to put so much money on the project.

scratchandgame,

10 years later: De-Proton your life.

scratchandgame,

Why would we allow an unregistered company to provide their service and affect registered companies.

scratchandgame,

6 release candidates until the system is usable and we have newer software. Damn.

scratchandgame,

wiped clean?

It is windows users that pretend to be linux user.

They are root.

Google Allows Creditors to Brick Your Phone (lemmy.world)

I installed NetGuard about a month ago and blocked all internet to apps, unless they’re on a whitelist. No notifications from this particular system app (that can’t be disabled) until recently when it started making internet connection requests to google servers. Does anyone know when this became a thing?...

scratchandgame,

the phone world is fucked. Use a landline phone :)

scratchandgame,

Then why does the Tor Project choose Firefox over Chromium as its browser base? Chromium is incredibly insecure and full of holes. Post this wishy washy bullshit on reddit, not on Lemmy.

Because Tor browser’s goal is maximum anonymity and onion service. Firefox might be lag behind in security, but its code and features met the privacy requirements. Tor browser try to achieve some security by using noscript and block some web feature.

scratchandgame,

Chromium is inadequate and bad.

For a anonymous browser, but not for a secure browser. The paper is purely about privacy and anonymity. No security (sandboxing, mitigations) here.

scratchandgame,

Also, security means nothing if privacy and anonymity are worse.

Security here is protection from exploits, bugs,…

scratchandgame,

Chromium sandboxing means nothing when it leaks so much data.

The attacker can’t gain access to the host with javascript.

A browser that support javascript but doesn’t have sandboxing might not leak these data but when their are bug in their js implementation, the attacker can gain more access to the host.

scratchandgame,

And those exploits are features in Chromium browsers.

Nonsense.

scratchandgame,

It can also be used to extract metadata, which is used to attack someone in other ways or through other software or OS.

Threat model. Regular user aren’t attacked this way?

Laugh on copyleft. If BSD was copyleft much thing would not have borned or being very different.

Copyleft is a way to prevent development. No one wants their contribution to be restricted.

Sadly, GNU is dying. musl, elftoolchain, chimera linux and much more BSD-licensed alternative is rising. The GPL viruses are losing permissively licensed, cleaner software. They have to stop spreading.

Anyone licensing their software permissively is not dumb or need to update their license. They have their intention.

🤢

🤢 on copyleft

scratchandgame, (edited )

You should deal with problem yourself rather than asking like this. Or forget ping.

fucking anyone disliking, that guy doesn’t even have knowledge what a hostname and a protocol is. They should learn it themselves. Don’t need to ask.

scratchandgame, (edited )

For a reasonably stable but updated os I would recommend FreeBSD. You only have to install X yourself, and linux guides doesn’t work. But reading manual page and searching on mailing lists can solve every issue. OpenBSD is easier but it is a bit “slow” in performance, packages are not updated (you have to follow -current, the latest development branch).

scratchandgame,

They both use hundreds megabytes of RAM just to render my static page. But for hydrogen web chromium use ~35M. This is shitty.

(w3m use 10M and in most case for searching we only need text-based browser)
