@mattblaze he almost literally started his statement with "rigged jury", so you were pretty close

Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra, near Lisbon. But which work of science fiction (or is it weird fiction?) am I thinking of? The author mentions that this was a significant source of inspiration.

scheidegger,

@dpiponi Quinta da regaleira is maybe the coolest place I visited in Europe ever. Myst vibes is exactly right! This was my favorite capture:

you know how it's never the compiler? or BLAS or whatever?

welp. it's either pytorch or the sparse matrix library, nondeterministically shitting itself on Apple Silicon. (currently working on running a Linux ARM test, but Intel macOS works.)

@mdekstrand good test suites are written in blood, sweat and tears

one requires a universe of infinite dimension so there is always an orthogonal direction to retreat to.

scheidegger,
@scheidegger@mastodon.social avatar

@interfluidity I’ve always thought it was a Deep Thing about linear algebra that infinite dimensional linear operators don’t always admit eigenvectors. The typical example is the shift operator, and it does precisely this: it “creates a new dimension” a la Hilbert Hotel that is in the orthogonal complement of its range, so you can’t find a “fixed point”

scheidegger,
@scheidegger@mastodon.social avatar

@interfluidity it often feels like language is infinite dimensional and this “retreat path to infinite orthogonality” makes arguments not terminate. It’s existentially frustrating

I've been trying to wrap my head around a C++ bug I've been dealing with for the last three days. Any C++ experts available? It has to do with the LLVM data structure ArrayRef, which seems to be mis-viewing the first entry in the data its iterating over.

scheidegger,

@j2kun knowing nothing else, smells like UB that the optimizer is taking advantage of

Reading:

pure and spurious crtitical points […] of linear networks https://arxiv.org/pdf/1910.01671

The geometry of the set of equivalent linear networks https://arxiv.org/pdf/2404.14855

This is really good stuff. It puts good foundations on some of the observations my students Zhenge Zhao and Mingwei Li made in our distill paper.

Feels like we’re finally making foundational progress in understanding how neural networks and their training work

I read the Foundation trilogy over the last month or two, turns out I really didn’t remember it well, has to have been well over 30 years since I first read these.

overall I felt kinda meh about it, like maybe the time period when people should read this has ended

scheidegger,
@scheidegger@mastodon.social avatar

@regehr the suck fairy is relentless with Asimov and Clarke

scheidegger,
@scheidegger@mastodon.social avatar

@regehr huh. Rama is my favorite novel of his and I reread it fairly regularly. Woo boy did we not go long before making completely pointless references to bouncing boobs. I liked 2010 too, so maybe not as bad as Asimov

scheidegger,
@scheidegger@mastodon.social avatar

@synlogic @regehr their writing styles are empty. Its a writing prompt turned into a novel, I don’t know how else to put it (and to be clear, I grew up on that stuff. It’s just pretty bad in perspective) And it’s not like people didn’t know how to write back then. Wolfe is right there, you know?

Even if old Gibson is mostly style (Peripheral is excellent through and through), at least he knows how to put a sentence together

scheidegger,
@scheidegger@mastodon.social avatar

@regehr @synlogic Stranger is absurdly horrible. It’s one I never read back then, but these days it’s 👀👀👀

Yesterday I had one person say I'm too so pro-tech pro-capitalist and one person say I was trying to force a leftist ideology, and both were responding to A City on Mars. All I can say is I wish people would stop trying to find the hidden motive and just read the words as plainly written!

I don’t know what triggered this, but for the last few days I’ve been inundated with recruiter cold calls and cold texts. Every single one has been generic, no sign they know my name, or experience, or are calling about a specific job.

I’m perversely tempted to answer just to discover if it’s a garden-variety recruiter, or a scam like pretending they’re a temp agency and asking me to sign up with my banking details so they can “expedite my pay.”

scheidegger,
@scheidegger@mastodon.social avatar

@raganwald update. It’s not going to solve anything but certainly made my lunch a tiny bit better
