Sorry for the relative lack of posting from me this week. I've been trying out this novel activity called "shutting up"

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@jake4480 To be clear this is not necessarily a value judgment on anyone else's posts haha I love the silly weirdo community we have here

I've mostly just been tired/brain foggy this week, immersed in personal projects and also the trying to get out of the way of the Gaza protest coverage

I don't get it. You know these services obey the (unfair) (copyright) law. Why keep hosting Yuzu forks on Github or gitlab and communicating through Discord if you know they are going to be taken down.

It's like people have forgotten that if you are going to piss off a big company, you need to use your own infrastructure and be stealthy about it. Host your own repo, outside of public internet, work in private with the other devs, and don't boast about it.

@lonelyautomata People definitely have forgotten, or never learned in the first place. Most people who use the internet are dependent on these corporate services whether or not they are aware. I hope these types of events will wake people up to the need for an alternative

@dirkdierickx As somebody who has owned a copy of Mega Man Xtreme 2 for Game Boy Color since the early 2000s, it is surreal to see this bubble up to the surface all these years later

I was familiar with the other Zook games, but it's kind of interesting to see how much sprite-work was lifted for this version. Cool stuff, thanks for sharing

playing on non-nintendo hardware tastes like coke out of a pepsi bottle or kraft mac and cheese with barilla pasta or something.

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@buru5 I think it's better in a lot of ways, mainly with save states and emulator speedup when available. I'm struggling to connect this to your food metaphor, though

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@buru5 Yeah I feel you, I guess it's easy for me to forget about connectivity since I pretty much only play the games by myself.

That said I think some emulators can do link play? I remember using some rickety-ass setup with hamachi back in the 2000s lol. I've been eluding the gamer police for decades at this point

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@jake4480 @buru5

Turn based battles for me are preferable to be honest. I guess I am a weirdo, I don't know many others who agree.

That said I think the strategy involved with certain turn-based games makes them less "tedious" than games that are just, hack away at X number of monsters using the same attacks until you can go to the next area.

Not sure if Pokémon is a great example of this, though. Much more strategy and intrigue with high level human vs. human play than in the singleplayer

We need to bring back the era of unabashedly crude parody software

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@spinning_bird Windows 98 SE is my personal favorite, and is well-regarded generally speaking

This was a contemporary parody program lampooning Microsoft and Bill Gates specifically, replete with immature unrefined humor in the manner you may expect from the time. There were definitely some valid criticisms of Microsoft from a business standpoint (and still are), this attempt at humor was not a good source of them.

This video from LGR was my introduction to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lyfqUDFe0A

9x is my childhood homie. The last time the computer felt like a "magical" arena with endless possibilities.

I liked XP too, but definitely signaled the beginning of that "frutiger aero" aesthetic the zoomers love. I still firmly believe 7 was the last "good" windows though

I'm still on 10, it was when the ads and "telemetry" aka corporate spying and data harvesting began, at least openly. It can at least be tweaked to a more user-friendly state

rootcompute,

@buru5 Spend 5-10 minutes a day just blocking a bunch of accounts, entire servers you don't want to see. It's actually getting better for me, slowly

Edit: a good one to block right away is sportsbots.xyz if you don't care at all about sports news. That's sooo many accounts already and they are all just mirrored feeds from twitter anyway

@lonelyautomata It's kind of wild how little regard there is for the innocence of youth anymore. They are trying to repeal child labor laws in my state currently. Everywhere I look is a reminder of how deeply the world has been corrupted

In the meantime take care of your mind and body the best you can. Social media is a nice tool for human connection but can be a double edged sword

@buru5 Just got done reading the piece, took about an hour and 20 minutes.

I enjoyed this foray into fictional story-telling, the reliance on footnotes and eclectic use of pop-culture, gaming, random trivia throughout reminded me of a novel I read last year called House of Leaves. Not sure if you're familiar.

The footnotes are a nice way to incorporate some of the dry, mundane explanation/analysis writing that I know you detest using in your prose. I didn't think it interrupted the flow much

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@buru5 Either way, this was an engrossing read, and a reminder of how much work I have cut out to improve as a writer. Keep up the great work, man, would love to see more like this!

Also, I think I found a picture of that William guy

The greatest MMORPGs blind you to the fact that they are stealing your time and money via tedious gameplay mechanics by making you feel totally immersed in a world that's better than real life.

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@spinning_bird @buru5

Well you could also buy that movie months later, or the concert DVD. Same with live sports. It's the realm of "home" media vs live events

Digital ownership rights are also important because digital media is becoming the only way to access certain things. New streaming shows & some games don't get physical releases, & companies that hold the rights can choose to yank access on a whim for a variety of reasons

I mostly use digital media, but others should have the choice

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@spinning_bird @buru5

Also with subscriptions, I personally don't like paying monthly for something I don't use. If I own the thing, than I'm secure in the thought that it's there and available all the time. I prefer to avoid these FOMO-type games companies love to play these days

Sorry if all this is rambly, I'm a little sleep deprived. But just generally I am on the side of fighting for a customer's autonomy over something they paid for as well as freedom of choice in the marketplace
