Since starting my sabbatical back in April, I've not done a lot of tech stuff. Mostly been visiting friends at confs, climbing up mountains, sitting in hot water, and working out. (Also learning how deep learning works, but never you mind that.)

In the end I came to the conclusion that I miss having fun, at work and in life.

I'm making some life changes in pursuit of having more fun. Stay tuned.

@scottjenson I am. And I'm going to change some of the sources of not-fun now!

Seeing Julia Evans and Randall Monroe closing out #strangeloop was a major highlight for me. I used to make comics for a living, and I love how both of them have used words and pictures to teach and connect with people in this space

Just sold my ballin' standing desk, G9 monitor, and mic boom all in the same day. Wow. Did I really just orchestrate a visa and international move all on my own? Such power!

rachelnabors,
@rachelnabors@toot.cafe avatar

@Jbasoo it is totally stressful, but I don't have a job to juggle, phew! And the visa I took care of some time ago. Good sequencing ❤️

Couples who have smart speakers... which ones are the least difficult to handle as dual users?

Some people store their money in gold.
Some transport it in diamonds.
Some protect it from inflation in real estate.

I ask: why not Mox Diamonds and Black Lotuses? Magic cards are small, easy to transport, and hold their value very well, even internationally

rachelnabors,
@rachelnabors@toot.cafe avatar

@janl fair... But for transporting out of a safe/ty deposit box, onto a flight, to a new place, I think nothing is lighter or more discreet!

rachelnabors,
@rachelnabors@toot.cafe avatar

@ainmosni @janl Not that hard. eBay and local game stores will hook you up. They are also innocuous and easy to slide past customs

rachelnabors,
@rachelnabors@toot.cafe avatar

@ainmosni @janl That depends. A mox ruby can sell for $25k.

I wouldn't use it as a money transportation device for evading taxes so much as a replacement for something like gold or real estate, something that holds value with nominal upkeep, only far more portable

I need to get a good new piece of checked luggage. Are there any brands y'all recommend?

rachelnabors,
@rachelnabors@toot.cafe avatar

@Chris I am not hauling my stuff around by a shoulder strap! Real luggage plz!

rachelnabors,
@rachelnabors@toot.cafe avatar

@Chris only a true masochist would insist on doing this to their back lol

Dear Friends Who Hike,

I would like to get a mattress that I can pack on hiking trips that is good enough to sleep on the floor with in between apartments. What do you recommend?

"On principle" is my favourite boundary phrase.

I have a tendency to overexplain (apologies to former coworkers—you know how I am!). And the last time you want to overexplain things is when you're erecting a boundary. Safe people don't need an explanation; unsafe people will look for openings to negotiate.

"On principle" is a "smooth like glass" phrase you can use to state "I won't/will do this thing and it would be hard to convince me otherwise"

I know a lawyer who'd enjoy programming as a hobby. What's a good, short intro book (no courses) to programming and a language today?

rachelnabors,
@rachelnabors@toot.cafe avatar

@janl I'm surprised you'd recommend Eloquent for a layperson. I found it much too dense even with a familiarity with JS!

@siderea To it's credit, the W3C did listen to SMEs like myself (animation) and Jenn Simmons and Rachel Andrew (layout). We were formally invited experts. I'm wondering what industry standards they should have confirmed to, given how much was proprietary and hidden under the skirts of software giants like Adobe and Microsoft?
