I'm extremely proud of all our students, but this is especially impressive! When Njumbe graduates from iunorthwest next Wednesday he will be the "youngest-known college graduate in the Hoosier state."

"Njumbe plans to attend medical school and become an orthopedic surgeon one day, but he has to wait until he's 18 to enroll. In the meantime, he's going to pursue a master's degree, he said." 🤯

As a former director for civic integrity at Twitter, I’ve been disturbed for some time about what Elon Musk is doing with his private global platform.

Today, I took the step of leaving Twitter, completely.

Why?
Here’s my last tweet:

@eddie1perez Thanks for posting such an in-depth and thoughtful thread. I'm glad you're here on Mastodon and the Fediverse!

@samxavia So many more people are becoming aware of the Fediverse as a result. Think of it as a "gateway platform" to the harder Fediverse!

Hi @ct_bergstrom, I'd love to know your thoughts on Jonathan Haidt's new book "The Anxious Generation" (https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/729231/the-anxious-generation-by-jonathan-haidt/).

It sounds like the "science" behind it is probably bunk (https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-00902-2) but the actionable suggestions for parent behavior/regulation seem reasonable to me. Maybe a case of being right if for the wrong reason?

PSA - While is starting to connect with the , they do not yet have full integration. Right now:

-If you LIKE a post coming from Threads, the user is notified but only with a generic "1 like from the Fediverse."

-If you REPLY to a post coming from Threads, the user will not see the reply.

-If you FOLLOW a Threads user, the user will not see the follow.

pollak,
@pollak@mstdn.social avatar

@vwbusguy Good addition! Although user mentions appear to work correctly in the sense that they remain as links to the correct account/platform. Although, maybe you meant the Threads user doesn't get a mention notification?

pollak,
@pollak@mstdn.social avatar

@vwbusguy Oh Ah, I gotcha. Other than "likes," communication is only one way: Threads TO Fediverse.

A Threads user cannot access or reference anything (content, users, etc.) FROM the Fediverse yet.

pollak,
@pollak@mstdn.social avatar

@vwbusguy Interesting maybe YMMV? It's pretty much instantaneous for me on mstdn.social. I can post something on Threads, change browser tab to Mastodon, hit refresh and it's there.

pollak,
@pollak@mstdn.social avatar

@vwbusguy Okay, now I am getting about a 5 minute lag in Threads content showing up here. I wonder if Meta vastly underestimated the amount of additional load that would be coming from the fediverse.

I had been enjoying my time on Threads. As a platform I don't like it nearly as much as Mastodon/ActivityPub, but it is where most of the people I want to follow are. However, in the last few weeks it's gotten noticeably more toxic and argumentative, presumably with the continued arrival of people from Twitter. I think I'm going to start spending more time here now! :blobcat_praise:

Went out to lunch with coworkers today and happened to be the only male. The restaurant has huge portions and we all took our leftovers home. Opened my bag tonight to see this. 🤣

Rep. Mrvan raises important points on the potential sale of US Steel to Nippon Steel: "we must not allow foreign ownership of U.S. Steel to jeopardize the strength of our economy, our national security and the livelihoods of steel-producing communities throughout our nation.” /1

pollak,
@pollak@mstdn.social avatar

I completely agree. This is an iconic American company producing a good essential to our nation. We need to look closely at the impact this sale might have on national security AND local steelworkers, which represent roughly 15% of all income in Northwest Indiana. /2

pollak,
@pollak@mstdn.social avatar

I'm quoted in the article as well, and don't want my words to be mistakenly interpreted as full support of the deal. My optimism is for the growing awareness of the incredible assets in Northwest Indiana, assets which I believe have been greatly undervalued, directly demonstrated by this deal. /3

pollak,
@pollak@mstdn.social avatar

While this sale is clearly a (very) good deal for USS, it's less clear how it will play out for local steelworkers and the nation. Personally, I would feel much better if the buyer were Cleveland Cliffs, but what they offered (and the most they may be able to offer) is far less than Nippon. /4

As I understand it, Meta has a phased rollout plan regarding ActivityPub. Its efforts today are little more than effectively reposting a few Threads accounts to ActivityPub, but it will start adding features for tighter integration throughout the course of next year. https://www.threads.net/@zuck/post/C0zXcQmxO77/?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ%3D%3D

pollak,
@pollak@mstdn.social avatar

@mmasnick Unfortunately, it looks like mastodon(.)social and associated instances have defederated Threads already, so we're unlikely to experience Threads through ActivityPub. I wonder if we'll see people migrating toward instances that have not defederated so they can follow folks on Threads.

List of instances that have defederated Threads here: https://fedipact.veganism.social/

"More People are Choosing to Live in Northwest Indiana and that's a Very Good Sign"

This is one of the topics I've been wanting to write about for some time. I think it's some of the strongest and clearest evidence that the future for Northwest Indiana is bright.

@brian Really? Is it good there? I've never tried it!

pollak,
@pollak@mstdn.social avatar

@brian I don't think I've ever actually eaten in the cafe, just had ice cream or cider. I'll have to check it out. I've been to the restaurant several times. They used to indicate with an icon on the menu if the item was made from an animal raised on the farm (e.g. bacon), which I thought was cool, even if it made some customers uncomfortable. Seems like they got rid of the icons last time I was there.

So, remember that lawsuit parents filed against Lake Central schools in 2021 claiming their mask mandate was "unconstitutional?" Well, it's over now and did not go well for the plaintiffs. Dismissed for lacking "both a factual and legal basis.” Plaintiffs must pay $16k in court fees.

If the Twitter rate limit really is due to excessive scraping (and I'm skeptical it is) then that's a direct result of eliminating (reasonable) API access. Get rid the official way to collect data and users will find unofficial ways (i.e. scraping). /1
