    @aiefel If you do, try looking through your camera app on your phone. To the naked eye I could only see hints of pink in the sky, but it came out like this through my phone.

    Accidentally ended up interacting with Meta’s AI on IG tonight. I was trying to find a photo of my college, using location tags.

    Since there is apparently no tag for Red Square at The Evergreen State College, AI automatically kicked in and sent me this image.

    I don’t know where this is supposed to be, but it’s nowhere I’ve been.

    Saw my first Cybertruck in the wild.

    All I could think was "Why are there still Cybertrucks in the wild?"

    @aiefel Are you a Swedish grandfather? I had one of those and he would black licorice by the handful.

    parkerd,
    @parkerd@mstdn.social avatar

    @aiefel From my experience, it’s not a bad way to go.

    Other signs that you’re becoming a Swedish grandpa:

    • Retire to a small seaside town

    • Spend your time fishing or building furniture in your workshop, which is covered in anti-Nixon political cartoons

    • Enjoy black coffee brewed every morning in the same stovetop percolator you’ve had for 50 years

    • Go for twice daily walks on the pier and gossip with the boys

    • Walk to the community center once a week to pick up your government cheese

    @aiefel My kid to me today: I don’t need to see the eclipse, I already saw one last year.

    Already jaded at 11 🤷🏻‍♀️

    In the middle of watching Ripley. While Andrew Scott is quite good, for me the true star is this resplendent and judgemental cat.

    “We're not doomscrolling anymore. Doomscrolling was a behavior triggered by all the anticipatory anxiety we felt. It was a very real and legitimate anxiety, because we didn't have the slightest clue what to expect. Now, more of us do know what to expect. We're fairly well acquainted with doom at this point.

    We're not just scrolling doom anymore.

    We're the doom that's scrolled.”

    Been thinking about moving on and off for a while, and I feel like we’re only here for another 2-4 years.

    Housing prices in Portland no longer makes moving in-town a whole lot of sense. Family are in Hawaii and California, which also feels too expensive. Medical needs make staying near a large city or town a necessity. Being Covid-aware also necessitates a community where we won’t be harassed constantly.

    Maybe somewhere in the Puget Sound area? Canada? Willing to hear any suggestions.

    @Pentapod I just looked at the forecast this week 🥶 It’s a lot to consider, especially since Hilo, Hawaii was another suggestion. They’re complete opposites 😆

    The TikTok fear mongering is at idiotic levels. But go ahead and alienate a whole demographic of young voters, have fun with that. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/03/08/tiktok-ban-biden-sign-congress-trump/

    “There's nothing wrong with doing what the mice do when the sugar runs out. In fact, it often feels like someone is doing a study on us, trying to figure out exactly how many times we'll keep sticking our nose in a hole for a little sugar. You're not crazy or depressed for wanting to quit. This is what sane, healthy animals do when it's not worth it to try so hard.”

    @aiefel Food for thought? For what it’s worth, I’m very pro-quitting. I know it’s tricky from a I-have-to-live-on-something basis.

    Earlier this week I sent one of those mass action emails asking various Oregon officials to bring back masking in healthcare.

    Received a response from my state rep that said: “I am alarmed that CDC data is still showing high levels of COVID transmissions. Should this turn into another major outbreak, I am confident public health officials will encourage a return to some of the stricter requirements we saw during the hardest days of the pandemic.”

    parkerd,
    @parkerd@mstdn.social avatar

    Instead of just getting pissed off I decided to send a response that included the @erictopol piece in the @latimes

    https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2024-01-04/covid-2024-flu-virus-vaccine

    parkerd,
    @parkerd@mstdn.social avatar

    Surprisingly I just received a response from him, in which he admitted he didn’t realize that we were in a surge (he called it a “sneaker wave”, which I guess it is for folks not seeking Covid info) and said it is concerning that there is no accurate case count information available for Oregon. He agreed to look into these issues. I’m not hopeful that this is going to change anything, but I did let him know that I’ll be in touch again.

    Maybe that’s the energy I need to bring into this year?

    One of my intentions (NOT resolutions) for 2024 was to be done with relationships that didn’t support or nourish me. Which means I’m now in the process of breaking up with my therapist.

    It’s okay,. It’s mutual. She isn’t sensitive to my need to continue to shield from Covid. It’s been a sticking point for a few months.

    I’m still in the process of finding new support, but am already impressed by the folks in the Covid-Cautious Therapy Directory.

    One thing I've learned from this pandemic is, if you want the most accurate and up-to-date date information on any chronic or terminal illness, don't ask the doctors. Ask the patients.

    parkerd,
    @parkerd@mstdn.social avatar

    @PacificNic Agree. When I saw my doc in March, he said that unless we had been living in complete isolation I had Covid at some point. I then told him: (1) We pretty much have as (again) my husband is a kidney transplant recipient; (2) No, vaccines aren’t effective for organ transplant recipients; (3) Evushield was taken off the market in January 2023; (4) He cannot take Paxlovid as a kidney transplant recipient.

    Used to think he was a good doc, but having to info dump made me question this.

    With the weather turning here in (30s expected overnight this weekend), time to think about winter hibernation viewing.

    To offset the winter depression, I'm thinking comfort views like Northern Exposure and Psych.

    Any suggestions appreciated.
