Madame Web features Sydney Sweeney who I know from a movie I cannot fully place. I looked at her credits and I don't really remember any of these. My best guess is it was Nocturne, and Nocturne turned out to be forgettable. This is why I log all my horror watches in a spreadsheet now.

Weekend hobby hacking is off to a decent start.

I found my way to a pragmatic (some values are hard-coded) solution to fixing my Z depth woes.

I'm now setting a CurrentLayer component on the player that holds an enum of valid layers (e.g. foreground, background) and there's a dedicated system that

  • tweaks the z
  • re-parents the entity to the correct layer entity in the LDtk hierarchy

With this done, I can focus on cleanup and close the issue for "better collision and movement."

I guess after the movement issue is closed I'm going to reward myself with aimless refactor time, just to clean things up further.

If I can do something nicer around input handling, I'd enjoy that. Breaking up big systems too.

I don't know what I'll look at after that. Perhaps camera movement to follow the player. This will mean I can start making the levels larger than the window 😅

It'll also mean I can start to look at dynamically loading in new levels as the player moves around in the world (which is an interesting feature of LDtk).

I think my favorite program in the entire linux/unix toolchain is "file". Did you even know about this program? It's on every system including MacOS and it's magic. You run it on any file and it just tells you what it is. Any file. I don't know who keeps this updated but it supports surprising things. Like it knows Windows file formats. If it's a executable it tells you if it's 32- or 64- bit. If it's an image it tells you the size and channels. If the file extension lies it just figures it out.

@mcc I've been running linux on the desktop since 2009 and this week I finally caved and looked up how to re-run a command from history.

It is !1234 where 1234 is the number of the entry in history's output.

Yes, I use reverse search more often than history, but dang I wish I knew this closer to 2009.
