This is a horrible precedent and I truly hope it doesn't become more widely adopted elsewhere. https://ua.usembassy.gov/message-for-u-s-citizens-elimination-of-residence-abroad-exception-to-dual-citizen-departure/

nlovsund,
@nlovsund@mastodon.acc.sunet.se avatar

@ben Some EU countries already work this way (see Croatia): https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Union_citizenship

In times of conflict this is inevitable, more so when national identity is a reason for conflict.

nlovsund,
@nlovsund@mastodon.acc.sunet.se avatar

@ben That is way too sensitive a subject, think about the baltics or the balkan countries. Far right would have a field thay denouncing the EU. In my experience most people are not even aware of double (and more) nationality and the implications of it on a country per country basis.

nlovsund,
@nlovsund@mastodon.acc.sunet.se avatar

@ben I agree with you but I'll tell you this: I am constantly reconciling my anarchistic ideals while honoring my french nationality, even though I have emigrated indefinitely. I still vote, I would pay taxes if that became a thing. If France ever called me to serve in defense of the country? I have no idea what I would do, but I am 100% certain I would be guilt ridden if I turned down the call. National identity gets under your skin in ways that are hard to escape.

nlovsund,
@nlovsund@mastodon.acc.sunet.se avatar

@ben In my case it wasn't imposed, but embraced. My parents are refugees (civil war, pogrom) and I was born without any nationality.

Alright, lots of heavy discussions today, so let's talk about something silly!

What is a movie that always makes you laugh?

Personal pick:

Anything Mel Brooks, but Robin Hood: Men in Tights, it's just funny every time I watch it.

@RickiTarr The first Police Academy. The speech scene has me in shakes. The stupid gags all along get me every time.

Should citizens of your country who live abroad be allowed to vote in national elections?

nlovsund,
@nlovsund@mastodon.acc.sunet.se avatar

@evan Strong yes, no 2nd class citizenships. French citizens living abroad are even represented in parliament, by geographical regions (northern Europe in my case).

"In the European Union, countries do not allow double nationality" That is a false statement. Where did you get that from?

@evan

nlovsund,
@nlovsund@mastodon.acc.sunet.se avatar

@CanisMajoris

If you are not planning to come back home, you are an emigrant. The word "expat" has a very specific significance: you are temporarily sent away for employment / contractual reasons.

I'm only raising this because of the (racist) tendency to call westerners "expats" and non-westerners "immigrants".

@evan

Thank you for the link. I'll note that all "noes" have caveats, and most of them have geopolitical / historical reasons for them (e.g. Baltic countries, Ireland, etc).

I propose that all new cars in the EU (new models and models currently in production as well as new imports) are to be electronically limited to 150 km/h top speed.

For the 26 countries with speed limits, this changes nothing. For Germany, this effectively enforces a 150 km/h speed limit on the highways, which is less restricting than the 130 km/h limit proposed by environmental politicians and organisations.

And as a bonus effect, this would drastically reduce the amount of new cars bought each year, as people would be hurrying to buy a used, pre-limit car instead, so it would be good for the environment, too, and prolong the life cycle of used cars while cutting down on excess new production.

nlovsund,
@nlovsund@mastodon.acc.sunet.se avatar

@amberage I'm not opposed to the idea, but electronic locks on licenceless cars in Sweden were easily circumvented by teenagers and led to fatalities.

I am more in favor of measuring speed on road stretches between 2 or more points.

"Le président de la République se dit ouvert à soumettre la réforme du dégel du corps électoral calédonien au vote de l'ensemble des Français, via un référendum."

Mais WTF?! Dans un processus de décolonisation, on accorde au peuple de Nouvelle Calédonie un gel du corps électoral, pour éviter qu'iels ne perdent le contrôle pour cause de minorité numérique. La remise en cause de cet accord déclenche un mouvement de protestation. Et l'autre tocard il veut un référendum national?! Mais quel mépris!

nlovsund,
@nlovsund@mastodon.acc.sunet.se avatar

:blobcatthink:

A Brit. I have just started watching the first episode of “The Man in the High Castle”. I like it so far & don’t think it is a spoiler to say the premise is an alternative world set in 1961 where the Axis Powers won WW2.
What I find interesting, as a bleeding-heart liberal, is that of all the horrors of a fascist alternative reality what offended me most was that those Nazi fucks did Concorde instead of us & the French. Do other people experience this? Is this nationalism?
