🧑‍💻 NetBSD On The State & Future Of X.Org/X11
@phoronix

「 The bad news is that to have applications running we require access to a larger open source ecosystem, and that ecosystem has a lot of churn and is easily distracted by shiny new squirrels. The process of upstreaming stuff to X.Org is an ongoing process, but it's likely we'll run into things that will never be suitable for upstream 」

Thanks for the link, @jbzfn, but I think it is important to emphasize the main message from the original article, not the summary from @phoronix: the *BSDs have their own fork of with a richer feature set, and better generic acceleration compatibility.

The question is about when does BSD stop supporting that fork, and for now the answer is that they will still do it…

Today, I learned something thanks to #NetBSD !

So, this NetBSD Foundation post:

https://mastodon.sdf.org/@netbsd/112382798178078765

Led me to this article:

https://blog.netbsd.org/tnf/entry/x_org_on_netbsd_the

Which led me to the lock (1) utility:

https://man.netbsd.org/lock.1

And finally to this command:

tmux lockc

... which allows one to safely lock a tmux session. I really like it so far.

This is the kind of depth and nice little surprise you don't get with commercial OS. Every day, you can learn about small utilities. :netbsd:

Got my hands on an old Mac Mini G4 PPC and immediately installed NetBSD 10 #macppc. Good docs of course, including specific to the G4. Once you get the hang of partioning for Open Firmware 3, pretty straight forward. My first Apple product 😂

Given that I see calls for better support for those random opensource devs that happen to maintain some of the most important pieces of software on the planet: a good friend of mine is maintaining expat - possibly the most important+popular xml library out there - and he has a message in his latest changelog that you may want to read: https://github.com/libexpat/libexpat/blob/R_2_6_2/expat/Changes

I made some progress with #NetBSD on the Orange Pi 5! With instructions from tnn@, I managed to get it into single-user mode. My root filesystem has no device nodes, so the shell is a bit limited. NetBSD can only access the NVMe, not the SD card – in the bootloader, it's the other way round. Setting up a root filesystem from Linux is not easy, notably MAKEDEV doesn't work.

Chapter 33. Crosscompiling NetBSD with build.sh
https://www.netbsd.org/docs/guide/en/chap-build.html

I just cross compiled a #NetBSD #aarch64 kernel on my amd64 running #Fedora.
Build.sh is nice.

I now have the sudden urge to test #NetBSD 10.0-RC1 on a VM.

Send help.

Or, at least, an .iso image. :netbsd:

I'd like to say it was really hard and difficult... But no, #NetBSD 10 is just good old NetBSD - the improvements are all under the hood and the installer just works!

I like it so far, more in-depth testing later.

(me: opens the afterboot man page...) :netbsd:
